Top Basketball Movies (4 & 3)

4. Celtic Pride (1996)
Starring: Damon Wayans, Daniel Stern, Dan Aykroyd

I have probably watched Celtic Pride somewhere between 50 and 75 times. It ranked number six on my top comedies list a year ago. The duo of Stern and Aykroyd are ridiculously hilarious in this movie about two jerks that live in Boston. Mike O'Hara and Jimmy Flaherty are huge Celtics fans and when C's face off with the Utah Jazz in the finals they get a little crazy. After meeting Jazz superstar Lewis Scott in a Boston club, they decide that it would be in the best interest of the Celtics to get him completely trashed so he can't function in the next game. The next morning Jimmy and Mike find Lewis Scott tied up in their apartment. The comedy ensues as they try to keep him away from the garden so that the Celtics have a chance at winning the NBA Championship.

Favorite Character:
Mike O'Hara

3. Pistol: The Birth of a Legend (1991)
Starring: Adam Guier, Nick Benedict, Murrell Garland

The Pistol has three things going for it that get it to number three on the list. 1) A great hard times high school basketball story about the greatest college basketball player of all time, 2) Fantastic music to coincide with all of Pete's 'homework basketball' drills, and 3) So much unitentional comedy that it may or may not be funnier than Celtic Pride. The Pistol tells the story of Pistol Pete Maravich as he makes his way on to the varsity basketball team as eighth grader. His dad Press tries to instill a great sense of confidence in young Pete, but the upperclassmen bball players attempt to knock it out of him. The Pistol earns his spot in the starting lineup and becomes the star of the team. This all leads to what else, but a matchup with the best black team in the state and a fantastic buzzer shot from Pete (that wins or doesn't win the game).
