2011-12 Season Outlook- Cable

Here at the Quiet Pool Perspective we like to give you a head start on figuring out what to watch heading into a new television season. Although we aren't cool enough to get all of the pilots in advanced, we have seen each and every trailer, have done the research, and have listened to what the critics are saying about all of the new shows for the 2011-12 season. So below are some my opinions on what should be watch, as well as some early insight on what I will be watching this year.
Here’s what’s new on cable…

A Quick Look

Excited For
  1. Luck
  2. Homeland
  3. Hell on Wheels
Interested In
  4. American Horror Story
  5. Boss
Giving a Chance
  6. Enlightened

And Some More Depth

American Horror Story – FX – Premieres 10/5
Need to Know: It comes from Ryan Murphy of Glee and Nip/Tuck infamy. From the title and the commercials it seems to be very creepy. It stars Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott.
Quiet Pool Plan: I am all for the crazy and the creepy so I will give this a whirl. I have been told Nip/Tuck was good before getting too crazy, and I’ve enjoyed Glee to a point, so I’m sure this will start out with a bang, even if it falls quickly.
Britton and McDermott on American Horror Story
Boss – Starz – Premiers 10/21
Need to Know: It’s not Hank. Kelsey Grammer returns to tv after his most recent failure for this Starz drama. He plays the mayor of Chicago with a terrible neurological disorder. It also stars Kathleen Robertson as Grammer’s personal aide.
Quiet Pool Plan: The guy from Back to You and Claire Arnold? That will hook me for a while. Starz doesn’t have the greatest history of scripted drama, but you gotta start somewhere right?

Enlightened – HBO – Premiers 2011
Need to Know: Half hour series starring the Jurassic Park lady and Luke Wilson. That’s all there is to know.
Quiet Pool Plan: It’s HBO, so they’ve earned my attempt.

Hell On Wheels – AMC – Premiers 11/6
Need to Know: It’s a western about a confederate soldier, who is seeking revenge on Union soldiers that killed his wife.
Quiet Pool Plan: Since I am now a southerner, I am all for getting back at those terrible Yankees. And I love me some period drama, so I am in this one.

Homeland – Showtime – Premiers 10/2
Need to Know: It’s the pick by most critics as the best new drama of the season. More importantly, I will be reviewing it this fall for TV Fanatic. It’s a psychological thriller starring Claire Danes as a CIA agent. A marine POW Damian Lewis returns to the U.S. and Danes thinks he was turned by Al-Qaeda and is a threat to the country.
Quiet Pool Plan: Even if I wasn’t getting paid to watch this, I would be excited. It sounds a lot like what Rubicon wanted to be, but failed so miserably at. It should be a good one.

Luck – HBO – Premiers January
Need to Know: This is the one folks. The one I’m probably most excited about. It stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, and it’s about gambling at a horse track. It will be run by David Milch of NYPD Blue and Deadwood fame. The pilot was directed by decorated filmmaker Michael Mann.
Quiet Pool Plan: This is as easy as it comes. I am on board. Let’s start the train now folks.

2011-12 Season Outlook- NBC

Here at the Quiet Pool Perspective we like to give you a head start on figuring out what to watch heading into a new television season. Although we aren't cool enough to get all of the pilots in advanced, we have seen each and every trailer, have done the research, and have listened to what the critics are saying about all of the new shows for the 2011-12 season. So below are some my opinions on what should be watch, as well as some early insight on what I will be watching this year.
Here’s what’s new on NBC…

A Quick Look

Excited For
  1. Smash
  2. The Playboy Club
Interested In
  3. Bent
  4. Up All Night
Holding Out Hope For
  5. Grimm
  6. Whitney
Passaroo
  7. The Firm
  8. Free Agents
  9. Prime Suspect

And Some More Depth

The Firm – Sunday – Spring
Need to Know: It is apparently an adaptation on the book and the original movie, which according to Wikipedia, was a legal thriller. This rendition stars Josh Lucas and the killer in both Harper’s Island and The Killing (spoiler alert).
Quiet Pool Plan: I will not even think about giving this a try.

The Playboy Club – Monday – 10:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Just like Pan Am, this is trying to grab onto the coattails of Mad Men. It stars Eddie Cibrian and some attractive ladies as the Playboy Bunnies.
Quiet Pool Plan: I have been a fan of Cibrian since he was a janitor with one line in an episode of Saved by the Bell College Years. It was that and then Tilt, and I was hooked on him. I will be gung ho on this at the start. We will see if it pans out.
The Playboy Club
Smash – Monnday – Spring
Need to Know: It’s a drama about the making of a Broadway musical. It stars Kat McPhee of American Idol as the young upstart gunning for the lead role. It also stars Debra Messing, Angelica Huston, and Lloyd Simcoe/Commodore Norrington as writer, producer and director of the play, respectively. Critics are loving this one.
Quiet Pool Plan: Well of course I’m in on this. If it’s anything like the only other musicals I know – Newsies and Disney movies – it will be awesome.

Up All Night – Wednesday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Christina Applegate and Will Arnett are parents of a new born baby, so they are up all night! It’s a mixed bag of reactions to this sitcom so far, but most people are loving Maya Rudolph in the main supporting role.
Quiet Pool Plan: Maya Rudolph really? I didn’t know people actually thought she was funny. I could never stand her on SNL, but I will definitely give this a shot for the other two. Apparently Arnett is the most normal he’s ever been in this. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad.

Free Agents – Wednesday – 8:30 p.m.
Need to Know: Hank Azaria and Adam Scott’s wife in Step Brothers are the leads in this sitcom. Apparently they are in P.R. and are attracted to each other. I think I turned the trailer off half-way through.
Quiet Pool Plan: Do you even have to ask? No thanks.

Whitney – Thursday – 9:30 p.m.
Need to Know: This was the first new season trailer I saw and I laughed out loud at how bad it was. Whitney is strange, and her boyfriend is a bit less strange? It’s a sitcom with a laugh track that comes on at everything that is not funny.
Quiet Pool Plan: Really? This is what you cancelled Perfect Couples for? How dare you! I will give this a chance for two reasons. 1) people think Whitney Cummings is funny. And 2) it’s on NBC’s Thursday night lineup.
Whitney and her tv boyfriend
Prime Suspect – Thursday – 10:00 p.m.
Need to Know: A re-imagination of the British series of the same name starring some lady in a fedora. It seems to be a simple procedural cop show.
Quiet Pool Plan: Once again, this is an obvious skip.

Grimm – Friday – 9:00 p.m.
Need to Know: The second of two fairy tale driven shows this fall, Grimm is of course based off of the Brothers Grimm stories. Unlike Once Upon a Time, which seems to have a nice story telling aspect to it, Grimm might be a police procedural with a fantasy twist.
Quiet Pool Plan: I am going to try it and see what it’s all about, because after all, it’s on Friday. It’s not looking good though.

Bent – Not Sure
Need to Know: A great threesome of Amanda Peet, Jeffrey Tambor and Vance from Perfect Couples star in this romantic comedy.
Quiet Pool Plan: Hope that it gets put on the air.

Don't Forget, there is plenty of great television returning to the screen this season.  Here are some of our favorites on NBC...

1. The Office – Thursday – 9:00 p.m.
2. Community – Thursday – 8:00 p.m.
3. Chuck – Friday – 8:00 p.m.
4. Parenthood – Tuesday – 10:00 p.m.
5. Parks and Recreation – Thursday – 8:30 p.m.
6. The Sing Off – Monday – 8:00 p.m.
7. 30 Rock – Thursday - Spring
8. Saturday Night Live – Saturday – 11:30 p.m.
9. The Voice – Monday - Spring

2011-12 Season Outlook- The CW

Here at the Quiet Pool Perspective we like to give you a head start on figuring out what to watch heading into a new television season. Although we aren't cool enough to get all of the pilots in advanced, we have seen each and every trailer, have done the research, and have listened to what the critics are saying about all of the new shows for the 2011-12 season. So below are some my opinions on what should be watch, as well as some early insight on what I will be watching this year.
Here’s what’s new on The CW...

A Quick Look

Almost Excited For
  1. The Secret Circle
Interested In
  2. Hart of Dixie
  3. Ringer
Passaroo
  4. H8R

And Some More Depth

Hart of Dixie – Monday – 9:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Rachel Bilson is back on television. This time she plays a New York doctor who can’t find work so she moves to the south. It also stars Jason Street and DeSean Hardell. Josh Schwartz helped create the show, but who knows how much input he will have in the day to day operations.
Quiet Pool Plan: Josh Schwartz, Summer Roberts, and Ornette Howard? I am in! I love the south now, so it also has that going for it, but the fact that it’s a medical drama doesn’t help its cause.
Hart of Dixie
Ringer – Tuesday – 9:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Sarah Michelle Gellar is also back on television. This is basically exactly like ABC Fam’s The Lying Game, in which twin sisters come together and one of them takes the life of the other. It also stars Richard “Guyliner” Alpert and that dude from Life Unexpected.
Quiet Pool Plan: It’s an interesting concept, just as The Lying Game is, but who knows how much it will be able to continue when its premise runs out of juice. I’m trying it, but am not all the way on board.

H8R – Wednesday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: A.C. Slater gets his celebrity friends to confront their biggest haters in hopes that they will accept them.
Quiet Pool Plan: Joking?

The Secret Circle – Thursday – 9:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Comes from the book series written by L.J. Smith, yes the one who also wrote The Vampire Diaries. It stars the main girl from Life Unexpected as a girl who learns she comes from a family of witches. John Connor from the Sarah Connor Chronicles also stars.
Quiet Pool Plan: Now that I am a big fan of TVD, I definitely have high hopes for this. Also I love me some Britt Robertson and her awkward running.

Don't Forget, there is plenty of great television returning to the screen this season.  Here are some of our favorites on The CW...

1. The Vampire Diaries – Thursday – 8:00 p.m.
2. 90210 – Tuesday – 8:00 p.m.
3. One Tree Hill – Monday – Spring
4. Gossip Girl – Tuesday – 8:00 p.m.
5. Nikita – Friday – 8:00 p.m.

2011-12 Season Outlook- FOX

Here at the Quiet Pool Perspective we like to give you a head start on figuring out what to watch heading into a new television season. Although we aren't cool enough to get all of the pilots in advanced, we have seen each and every trailer, have done the research, and have listened to what the critics are saying about all of the new shows for the 2011-12 season. So below are some my opinions on what should be watch, as well as some early insight on what I will be watching this year.
Here’s what’s new on FOX...

A Quick Look

Excited For
  1. Terra Nova
  2. The X Factor
Interested In
  3. Alcatraz
  4. New Girl
Giving a Chance
  5. The Finder
  6. Allen Gregory
Passaroo
  7. I Hate My Teenage Daughter
  8. Napoleon Dynamite

And Some More Depth

Allen Gregory – Sunday – 8:30 p.m.
Need to Know: Animated comedy starring Jonah Hill as the titular character. He heads to elementary school, but for some reason he acts way older than he is, so it causes plenty of problems. I guess this is the role he lost all of that weight for. David Goodman, who was a writer on Family Guy, is the showrunner.
Quiet Pool Plan: I’m still undecided. I guess I’ll give it a try, because kids acting like adults is always funny to me. Those of you who have never enjoyed Manny on Modern Family should probably steer clear of this.

Napoleon Dynamite – Sunday – Spring
Need to Know: It’s an animated version of the movie. Most if not all of the original cast is voicing.
Quiet Pool Plan: God no! I hated the movie, and I hate this.

Terra Nova – Monday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: The modern world has been all but destroyed so people are going back in time to give Earth a second chance. That’s all I need to know. They travel millions of years into the past in order to start over. They face many obstacles, including dinosaurs!
Quiet Pool Plan: I will be reviewing the show for TV Fanatic so I am in it for the long haul, and boy am I excited about that. As long as the extensive amount of time and effort it is taking them to make episodes doesn’t cut the season short, I will be good.
One of the survivor families on Terra Nova
Alcatraz – Monday – Spring
Need to Know: Hugo Reyes and some girl look into the reappearance of missing inmates from Alcatraz over 50 years ago. A bunch of Lost guys, including JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk are listed as Exec Producers.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will re-evaluate come midseason, but I had higher hopes for this when it was first announced. Something about it doesn’t have me all that interested. If it takes a turn for the supernatural, I may jump back on board.

New Girl – Tuesday – 9:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Zooey Deschanel is adorable. She stars in this sitcom about her being cute and the nerd dudes she’s friends with thinking the same thing. Damon Wayans Jr. was in the pilot but after Happy Endings got picked up, they replaced him with a different Black man. The creator apparently wrote No Strings Attached.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will watch for Zooey. If the rest of this turns out to be awful, then I will quit, but I have high hopes.

The X Factor – Wednesday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: It’s old school American Idol with Simon and Paula. They’ve added a different Black guy with glasses and another insufferable chick in Nicole Sherzinger. The contestant age minimum is lower, the age maximum is higher, and there can be groups.
Quiet Pool Plan: I am on board with Simon coming back into my life. With all the singing talent spread out over numerous shows now, there will never be anything like the best seasons of Idol, but if X Factor helps cancel Idol, I’m for it.
The X Factor judges
I Hate My Teenage Daughter – Wednesday – Winter
Need to Know: Sitcom starring Jaime Pressley. She and her friend hate their daughters. It comes from the ladies that did The New Adventures of Old Christine.
Quiet Pool Plan: I like you Jaime, but this should not be on tv.

The Finder – Thursday – Winter
Need to Know: A Bones spinoff starring the groom from Wedding Crashers, the video gamer from The Break Up, or the dying stud from that one episode of Las Vegas who smashed with Sam on those rocks. Geoff Stults is kind of awesome, and in this he solves crimes as The Finder.
Quiet Pool Plan: I doubt I will find the time to check this out, but that’s a shame because it will probably be decent.

Don't Forget, there is plenty of great television returning to the screen this season.  Here are some of our favorites on FOX...

1. Family Guy – Sunday – 9:00 p.m.
2. American Idol – Tuesday – Spring
3. House – Monday – 9:00 p.m.
4. Glee – Tuesday – 8:00 p.m.
5. Raising Hope – Tuesday – 9:30 p.m.
6. Bob’s Burgers – Sunday – 9:30 p.m.

2011-12 Season Outlook- CBS

Here at the Quiet Pool Perspective we like to give you a head start on figuring out what to watch heading into a new television season. So below are some my opinions on what should be watch, as well as some early insight on what I will be watching this year.
Here’s what’s new on CBS...

A Quick Look

Interested In
  1. 2 Broke Girls
  2. How to be a Gentleman
Holding Out Hope For
  3. Person of Interest
Passaroo
  4. A Gifted Man
  5. Unforgettable

And Some More Depth

2 Broke Girls – Monday – 8:30 p.m.
Need to Know: Created by Whitney Cummings, who apparently decided to make a better show for Kat Dennings than the one she has for herself on NBC. Yeah, so Kat Dennings and some other chick are waitresses at a diner in this sitcom. I think the other girl was rich and Kat has always been poor, so of course hilarity will ensue.
Quiet Pool Plan: From previews, this actually looks decent, or has promise anyway. I will plan on giving it half a season to hold my interest.
2 Broke Girls
Unforgettable – Tuesday – 10:00 p.m.
Need to Know: From the guy who brought you Without a Trace and Shark! No thanks. Even though the joke is already old news by now, this show’s title does not fit the quality of the program. You should all forget it even exists.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will not be trying this one.

How to be a Gentleman – Thursday – 8:30 p.m.
Need to Know: Critics are trashing this sitcom created by and starring Rickety Cricket from It’s Always Sunny. He plays the gentleman to Johnny Drama’s douche bag. Surrounding cast includes Dave Foley, Chloe from 24, and Murray from Flight of the Conchords.
Quiet Pool Plan: Quite excited to see how this awesome casts turns into an awful show.  With Rhys Darby playing like Murray from Conchords, I'm in it just for that.

Person of Interest – Thursday – 9:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Benjamin Linus and some other guy who was Jesus star in a boring CBS police procedural. And as I’m writing this I’m seeing that it was created by Christopher Nolan’s brother, who co-wrote The Prestige and The Dark Knight with Chris. I’m a bit less likely to write this off now, but the previews look so bad, so it's still tough.
Quiet Pool Plan: Watch the pilot and then probably stop. If people start talking about it, maybe I’ll jump back in.

A Gifted Man – Friday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: A gifted, arrogant doctor is met by the spirit of his ex-wife in what should be another boring medical drama. Rita from Dexter, Lights Leary’s brother, and Margo Martindale are in it.
Quiet Pool Plan: No thanks.

Don't Forget, there is plenty of great television returning to the screen this season.  Here are some of our favorites on CBS...

1. Survivor – Wednesday – 8:00 p.m.
2. Big Brother – Weekly - Summer
3. Hawaii Five-0 – Monday – 10:00 p.m.
4. The Amazing Race – Sunday – 8:00 p.m.
5. The Mentalist – Thursday – 10:00 p.m.
6. Rules of Engagement – Saturday – 8:00 p.m.

2011-12 Season Outlook- ABC

Here at the Quiet Pool Perspective we like to give you a head start on figuring out what to watch heading into a new television season. Here’s what’s new on ABC...

A Quick Look

Excited For
  1. Once Upon a Time
  2. The River
Interested In
  3. Revenge
  4. Last Man Standing
  5. Pan Am
Holding Out Hope For
  6. Suburgatory
  7. Charlie’s Angels
  8. Apartment 23
Passaroo
  9. Man Up
  10. Good Christian Belles

And Some More Depth

Once Upon a Time
Once Upon a Time – Sunday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: One of two fairy tale shows premiering this season. The characters live two lives; one in reality and one in fairy tale land. This comes to us from a couple writers from Lost not named Damon and Carlton. It stars Dr. Cameron from House.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will be watching this one throughout its run. Between the material, the writers and the leading lady, I’m in it for the long haul…and you should be too.

Pan Am – Sunday – 10:00 p.m.
Need to Know: It is the flight attendants from Pan Am in the 1960s, but with some sort of conspiracy added on to the drama. This is again one of two shows doing the same thing, this time it is trying to cash in on Mad Men’s success by setting itself up in the 60s. Tommy Schlamme of West Wing, Sports Night and Studio 60 fame is one of the creators. Christina Ricci, whose claim to fame is having her name said by Annie Edison in an episode of Community, will star.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will be checking this out, which can be said for most new series, but I have decently high hopes for the drama. If I’m choosing between this and NBC’s The Plaboy Club, it will be the latter.

Last Man Standing – Tuesday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: @HitFixDaniel put it best as Home Improvement, but with daughters. I will give Tim Allen the benefit of the doubt for what he has given me during three Santa Clauses and three Toy Stories. The creator of this sitcom comes from the 30 Rock writing room, which is a good sign. Also stars the lady from So I Married an Axe Murderer, Billy Rosewood’s partner from Beverly Hills Cop 3, and little Loretta from this past season of Justified.
Quiet Pool Plan: This may be my new Gary Unmarried. I don’t expect intelligence from it, but I’m sure I will laugh at Tim Allen a bit, and I have ties to most of the supporting cast, so I will stick with it for at least half a season.

Man Up – Tuesday – 8:30 p.m.
Need to Know: Sitcom by an unknown starring a bunch of unknowns, Teri Polo and the guy from Balls of Fury. Trailer looks really dumb.  I think the guys play a lot of online video games.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will try to watch the first episode, but will most likely stop there. No desire here.

Apartment 23 – Tuesday – Spring
Need to Know: I guess this is a sitcom, but the trailer could fool you. It doesn’t look all that funny, and I have never enjoyed Krysten Ritter, who is one of the leads. Also, James Van Der Beek plays himself, which is interesting.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will re-evaluate come mid-season, but I will probably try a couple episodes and then bail if it’s not working for me.

Suburgatory – Wednesday – 8:30 p.m.
Need to Know: A sitcom about a chick that moves from NYC to the suburbs, and it’s really hard for her.  Chris Parnell, Larry David’s wife, Steve the Pirate, Lloyd from Entourage, and that guy who left his Cranberries CD in the car from Clueless star in the trailer.
Quiet Pool Plan: This is just weird enough to be interesting.  Plus, I like the cast, which can make up for a shaky start…I will give this a shot for a few weeks. If it’s too weird and not funny, then I’ll stop.

Emily Van Camp in Revenge
Revenge – Wednesday – 10:00 p.m.
Need to Know: Emily Van Camp. Emily Van Camp. Emily Van Camp. That’s all I need to know, but if you never saw Brothers and Sisters or Everwood, you won’t know what I’m talking about. This seems like an adult Gossip Girl in the Hamptons starring Emily Van Camp trying to get revenge on someone.
Quiet Pool Plan: I will come for Emily, I will most likely get sucked in by the plot twists and rich lifestyle.

Charlie’s Angels – Thursday – 8:00 p.m.
Need to Know: A remake of the original. Or is it of the more recent movies? Not sure, but it stars Minka Kelly and two other attractive ladies.
Quiet Pool Plan: I’ll watch the first episode and probably stop…unless Minka Kelly looks too good to quit.

Good Christian Belles - Not Sure
Need to Know: Ricky Bobby's wife plays a woman that returns to her hometown of Dallas in this dramedy.  Kristin Chenowith also stars.
Quiet Pool Plan: Not even attempting this one.

The River - Not Sure
Need to Know: This is a late addition, because it wasn't on the 2011-12 schedule on Wikipedia.  It's labeled as a paranormal/horror/thriller series.  It's about a group of people that are searching for a famous tv reporter who went missing somewhere on the Amazon.  It stars Teri Bauer and Steven Saunders from 24.
Quiet Pool Plan: Absolutely.

Don't Forget, there is plenty of great television returning to the screen this season.  Here are some of our favorites on ABC...

1. Modern Family – Wednesday – 9:00 p.m.
2. Happy Endings – Wednesday – 9:30 p.m.
3. Cougar Town – Tuesday – 9:00 p.m.
4. Bachelor Pad – Monday – 8:00 p.m.
5. Grey’s Anatomy – Thursday – 9:00 p.m.

Cable Fall Lineup Preview

Last but definitely not least.  So with the cable fall lineup I basically just put the shows that I watch or am looking forward to trying.  There is so much cable programming that I couldn't go over all of it, especially when a bunch of it (like so much broadcast programming) is bad.  I really like how the cable networks bring out their shows in waves.  It's a much better format.  Instead waiting for three weeks to see the seventh episode of a season in December or March, you usually get 13 eps in about 14 or 15 weeks.  Then the next set of shows comes in.  With HBO right now we have True Blood, Entourage and Hung.  Next wave is Boardwalk, Eastbound and Bored.  I'm sure after that we'll get more Treme, maybe Curb and Ricky Gervais.  It's a good way to work.

The other network that makes up most of today's list is FX.  They're really coming into their own here.  With one great comedy in It's Always Sunny, and one up-and-comer in The League.  One of my top three shows in Sons of Anarchy, and now adding a hopeful in Terriers.  Justified in the spring.  It doesn't get much better than this for cable.

Sunday
9:00- Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
If you aren't excited for this prohibition drama from Sopranos writer Terrence Winter, then you got some issues. Steve Buschemi in the lead, Omar from The Wire, it's gonna be classic.
9:00- Dexter (Showtime)
I'm really glad I got caught up on this. Apparently they're not going to have one 'big bad' this season, which will be a nice change of pace.
10:00- Bored to Death (HBO)
The trailer for season two makes it sound exactly like season one. That's fine by me...I don't need development in my comedies.
10:30- Eastbound & Down (HBO)
Danny McBride is rumored to be in talks for the new head gig at The Office. Does that spell an end to Eastbound? How many seasons could this shtick really work for?

Monday
10:00- Men of a Certain Age (TNT)
Andre Braugher is great and all, but if anyone deserved an Emmy nod from this show's first season it was Ray Romano.

Tuesday
10:00- Sons of Anarchy (FX)
Probably the show I'm most excited for a return. Number three in the current power rankings but I can absolutely see it gaining the new number one spot with a good start to season three.

Wednesday
9:00- Top Chef: Just Desserts (Bravo)
Doesn't sound all that exciting. I need a full meal to be satisfied. If it's not as good as the original, I might quit.
10:00- Terriers (FX)
I've been hearing good things about this private investigator show. I also am a big Donal Logue fan from his Grounded for Life days, so here's hoping.

Thursday
10:00- It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (FX)
If you're not watching this, you should be. Always listen to Joe Buddens.
10:30- The League (FX)
Here's a situation where the hate went too far. Sure the first couple of eps were terrible, but it did get much better as the season went on. The hate was multiplied by the fact that there wasn't enough fantasy football. Rumor is that the second season has much more fantasy.

The CW Fall Lineup Preview

The CW, which came to be after the combination of two networks, currently still feels like two networks. There is the Monday through Wednesday schedule and then the Thursday and Friday schedule. Although it's a shame that I have to admit that I watch much more of the girly soaps at the beginning of the week, I don't feel that I'm missing much by not watching the sci-fi end of the week stuff.

Only a couple of new shows hit the schedule again this year, neither of which are going be groundbreaking. They'll have to rely on the old faithfuls to keep them afloat for another season. If The CW did go out of business, I wonder how many of these series would get picked up, and by whom? I'm sure one or two out of 90210/Gossip/Life Unexpected would get signed by ABC Family, while I can see Vampire Diaries going to SyFy.

Once again, blue are what I'll be watching. Yellow is what is new in 2010.

Sunday

Monday
8:00- 90210
Naomi Clark's attitude is mainly the only thing good about this show.
9:00- Gossip Girl
They just keep bringing in the big guns to guest star. Next up is Katie Cassidy. How about you replace one of these (also Hilary Duff and Joanna Garcia) with your terrible leading lady that wants to get killed off.

Tuesday
8:00- One Tree Hill
A show that was hitting it's prime during seasons 3-5, really has fallen a long way as of late.
9:00- Life Unexpected
What to expect...a crossover episode between this and OTH this season.

Wednesday
8:00- America's Next Top Model
9:00- Hellcats

Thursday
8:00- Vampire Diaries
Apparently vampires are really popular right now. On a related note, how is Taylor Lautner liked by anyone? He's not good looking, he can't act, he's not funny, he has no charm. Astonishing.
9:00- Nikita
People are saying Maggie Q is good, but this is really ho hum. I'll give it one ep to win me over.

Friday
8:00- Smallville
9:00- Supernatural
I wouldn't mind watching one or both of these series some summer.

CBS Fall Lineup Preview

We're back to look at some more 2010 Fall tv and today it is CBS. You know, sometimes I wish the great reality tv of CBS was on a different network. That way I could hate on CBS more than anything else in the world. But the reality of life is that they do have Big Brother, Survivor and The Amazing Race, so CBS will always have something going for it.

On the other hand, there is the wealth of garbage that they put on the air year after year. Now that garbage does get all of the best ratings, but it is still the worst.  With The Mentalist holding things down from the non-reality aspect, I'm hoping Hawaii Five-0 steps up to the plate in its first season to give me two quality programs on CBS.

As always shows I watch, or will be trying, are in blue.  New series are marked with yellow.

Sunday
8:00- The Amazing Race
Isn't deserving of the Emmy year after year, but it's worth watching if you don't get to travel around the world in real life.
9:00- Undercover Boss
10:00- CSI: Miami

Monday
8:00- How I Met Your Mother
8:30- Rules of Engagement
The only CBS comedy I will watch. Puddy, David Spade and the guy that reminds me of Lansing make a good trio.
9:00- Two and a Half Men
9:30- Mike and Molly
Apparently it's nothing but fat jokes. Sure that could be funny, but not when it's from the people that made Two and a Half Men.
10:00- Hawaii 5-0
I will watch any show that uses Hawaii as its back drop and stars Daniel Dae Kim. Sure Lost and this reboot are the only two that come to mind, but still.

Tuesday
8:00- NCIS
9:00- NCIS: LA
10:00- The Good Wife
That Julianna Margulies has picked up too many awards to count in her first season. Still, this does not look interesting at all.

Wednesday
8:00- Survivor
Read that again! Survivor is now on Wednesdays. Mark your calendars. The contestants have been released and I have yet to look them over, other than to notice that one of them is Jimmy Johnson.
9:00- Criminal Minds
10:00- The Defenders
I had good luck with the last show I watched that took place in Vegas, so why not give it another go? I'll try watching Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell for a few eps.

Thursday
8:00- Big Bang Theory
8:30- Feces My Dad Says (credit: Dan Fienberg)
How is everyone surprised that William Shatner is not funny on this show. I've never seen him be funny in anything.
9:00- CSI
10:00- The Mentalist

Friday
8:00- Medium
9:00- CSI: NY
10:00- Blue Bloods
Is this the one with Johnny Drama (I mean Donnie Wahlberg)? If so, it doesn't look that good.

FOX Fall Lineup Preview

Day Three...FOX's fall lineup for 2010.  Let's all admit this right away.  FOX has a great track record for soapy dramas (See: O.C., The and 90210, Beverly Hills).  That's why I'm pretty excited about Lone Star.  The trailer got me excited, but then to hear that critics like it as well only puts it over the top as a winner in 2010.

A couple other new shows, some old faithfuls in House, Family Guy and Fringe, and that about sums up FOX for 2010-11.  The networks that don't have 10 PM programming, like FOX and The CW, absolutely feel lighter than the other three.  But they don't  have as much fluff so at times it feels like they're bring more bang for their buck.  No foolish Law and Orders of CSIs here.  Just quality programming.  Sure I'm not a fan of some of it, but at least they're not lazy.

As per the usual, shows I'm watching are in blue...new series are in yellow.

Sunday
8:00- The Simpsons
Still? I'm sure it's funny, but I can never get myself to watch an episode anymore.
8:30- The Cleveland Show
I can only take a half hour of Seth McFarlane per week.
9:00- Family Guy
And here it is. The original is still the best.
9:30- American Dad
See: Cleveland Show, The

Monday
8:00- House, MD
I don't ever get excited for House, but I enjoy watching Hugh Laurie do his thing.
9:00- Lone Star
I loved it when I first saw the trailer, and there has been nothing but positive buzz coming from critics in recent weeks. This Texas soap should give me my fix once Friday Night Lights is off the air come 2011.

Tuesday
8:00- Glee
They're getting way too guest-star happy on this show. How bout you just do a good show instead of stunt casting guest appearances?
9:00- Raising Hope
Absolutely not.
9:30- Running Wilde
From the people of Arrested Development, so it has clout, but apparently the pilot wasn't very good. Will Arnett is usually funny though so I'll give it a try.

Wednesday
8:00- Hell's Kitchen
Two hours? Really? Every week?

Thursday
8:00- Bones
Never tried it, and doesn't look appealing.
9:00- Fringe
Wish I could get myself to jump back on the wagon. It might be too late, but it would be a nice sci-fi fix for me.

Friday
8:00- Human Target
Good enough. Depending on how busy I get, this procedural will be one of the first to hit the road.
9:00- The Good Guys
It runs for the entire summer and then is also on the fall lineup...I don't get this. This isn't early Beverly Hills, 90210 where you start in the summer because it takes place in the summer.

NBC Fall Lineup Preview

So we're taking a look at the 2010 fall season, and up next is NBC.  For a network that always comes in last in the ratings, it always seems to have the best group of shows.  With NBC it starts with comedy night done right, and in The Office, 30 Rock, Community and Parks & Recreation, they have four out of the top ten comedies on television.

Add Chuck, Parenthood and the final season of Friday Night Lights to that mix and you have a really solid core.  There are three new shows on the slate that I will be keeping an eye on.  1) Outsourced looks so bad that I'm curious to see how soon it gets the hook.  2) The Event seems pretty intriguing from it's promos and trailers, but according to critics it's not as good as it looks.  I'm curious to see if it can shine in the wake of all the Lost-type failings before it.  3) The Undercovers is a spy show on the same network as Chuck.  Is there enough room for two of these similar shows on a network like NBC?  We shall see.

Two hours of The Biggest Loser, two hours of Law and Orders and Sunday Night Football really take away from the rest of the prime time schedule at the peacock.  Remember blue is a show I'm watching and  yellow means it's new.

Sunday
8:00- Sunday Night Football

Monday
8:00- Chuck
Currently my number one ranked show, Chuck returns from what was a great season in 2009-10.
9:00- The Event
Was getting plenty of hype, but critics are claiming it has a lot of sizzle but no steak. Sounds like Flash Forward (sorry NYC).
10:00- Chase
Apparently the lead chick won people over at press tour, but that's not gonna do it for me.

Tuesday
8:00- The Biggest Loser
10:00- Parenthood
Made great strides over the course of last year. Great characters and some great story telling keep me coming back to this family drama.

Wednesday
8:00- The Undercovers
Not hearing great things, but JJ Abrams and a couple of leads that look interesting will allow me to try it for a couple eps.
9:00- Law & Order: SVU
10:00- Law & Order: Los Angeles

Thursday
8:00- Community
A great first season for the Joel McHale starer. Repeating that success is the tough part.
8:30- 30 Rock
Let's see how things go at this new time slot. An extremely sub-par year in 09-10, or was it just that there was so much more competition?
9:00- The Office
The hunt is on for Michael Scott's replacement. I'd be down with Danny McBride or Rhys Darby, but for now Steve Carell continues to show us what's up.
9:30- Outsourced
Not only do I ask why they would put this on instead of Parks & Rec, but I ask why put this on television at all?
10:00- The Apprentice

Friday
8:00- School Pride
9:00- Dateline
10:00- Outlaw
Only 'cause it's on Fridays, may I remotely think about giving this Jimmy Smits drama a try.

ABC Fall Lineup Preview

So with the 2010 fall tv season just around the corner, let's take a look at what we have coming our way. Below is ABC's schedule for the fall: Shows in blue mean that I am currently watching them if its a returner and I will be giving it a try if it's new this year.  Time slots in yellow mean that it is a new series.

ABC's biggest problem heading into the new season is not only that they lost Lost, but the two series they brought in last year to take its place, are not on the fall lineup.  Flash Forward was cancelled and V isn't set to return until mid-season.

For a network that, as recently as two years ago had no returning sitcoms, is staying alive because of them.  I really only watch Modern Fam, but Cougar Town and The Middle are also two of ABC's better shows.  Sure Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy still bring in the ratings, but that doesn't mean they're good shows.  Hopefully No Ordinary Family (right) and maybe one other newcomer can help ABC step its game up.

Sunday
8:00- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
9:00- Desperate Housewives
I gave up on DH a couple years back, but Brian Austin Green's arrival on Wysteria Lane this season has me wondering if I made the right choice.
10:00- Brothers and Sisters
I'm now wishing I gave up this ABC Sunday soap instead, as it has become extremely boring. Parenthood is the big family drama you want to be watching.

Monday
8:00- Dancing with the Stars
I watched the first two episodes last season for Ochocinco...I really couldn't get through much more.
10:00- Castle

Tuesday
8:00- No Ordinary Family
The only new fall ABC show that has me somewhat excited. I've heard good things about Chiklis form The Shield. Add an Incredibles-esque super hero feel and I'm on board for at least six eps.
9:00- Dancing with the Stars
10:00- Detroit 1-8-7
Michael Imperioli isn't bringing me in to this procedural cop drama.

Wednesday
8:00- The Middle
I watched an ep or two last season. It's decent but not worth the time.
8:30- Better With You
Like Nick Swisher, I'll follow Joanna Garcia anywhere, so this sitcom will get my attention for the first few eps.
9:00- Modern Family
Finally, something to get excited about at the network. My second favorite comedy of last year, Modern Family is going to have to keep bringing the heat to keep up with its first season.
9:30- Cougar Town
I watched an episode (or two) early on and didn't enjoy this at all. I've heard it got better, but like The Middle, not worth my time.
10:00- The Whole Truth

Thursday
8:00- My Generation
The jury's still out. Nothing too appealing other than that it's new.
9:00- Grey's Anatomy
How am I still watching this garbage? Was this good at one point? I can't remember.
10:00- Private Practice
I'm really glad I dropped this after only one season. Don't know if I could ever take two Shonda Rhimes shows.

Friday
8:00- Secret Millionaire
9:00- Body of Proof
Dana Delany...blah blah blah...boring procedural.
10:00- 20/20

Cable Fall Preview

Although many of these cable shows have already started, I believe they need their just due here.

HBO
Entourage

I thought I'd mention the two HBO programs that are finishing up their current seasons. Entourage has four episodes left and it has been as lackluster of a summer as ever for the entertainment dramedy. Lowlighted by Tom Brady's awful performance, season six has been less than stellar. Stop following E's love life. Nobody likes him. It's torture.

True Blood
True Blood, on the other hand, has taken as giant leap in the right direction in its sophomore season. What started out as a weak-charactered vampire show, has turned into a fantastic-storylined supernatural thriller. The 10th episode of this second season was one of my favorite eps of any show in a long time. After this past Sunday's penultimate ep, there is only one left this summer.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Curb Your Enthusiasm finally returns on September 20. After what was one of the two best seasons in the show's history, Larry David had a lot to live up to this fall. He found a way to get me even more excited. Prettttty, pretttttty, pretttttty excited. A Seinfeld Reunion. All four of the main actors from Seinfeld, yes Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and even Michael Richards, will be major contributors on this season of Curb. Not only that, but the premise of the season will be Larry and the gang putting a Seinfeld Reunion in the works.

Disney
After the DVD release of Hannah Montana The Movie this month and the television premier of Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie this past Friday, the Disney Channel's big three are picking up major steam. Joined by Sonny with a Chance, these three shows have gotten me hooked on the Disney Channel as I used to be with Even Stevens back in the day. They don't come without major success either, as the Wizards Movie recorded the highest viewership of the summer, with 11.4 million viewers. I'm assuming most of them are not 23 year old dudes.

Greek
I have yet to watch the season 3 premier of Greek that aired tonight (Monday) but I'm definitely excited for it to be back. Whether it's hating on Rusty's awkwardness, loving Cappie's wit, or crushing on Casey for some inexplicable reason, Greek always brings plenty of entertainment.

Mad Men
Mad Men is three eps in now, and it started up where it left off. Interesting, but not entertaining. I find myself a bit intrigued by the stories and historical elements of the show, but they don't manage to portray them in a way that gets me excited for the next episode. I'd much rather watch a show that can entertain without being smart (the late Las Vegas) than a smart show that fails to entertain (Mad Men).

CW Fall Preview

What we're excited for from The CW this fall.

View the entire fall lineup with recommendations here.

Gossip Girl
Hardly any of the characters are sweet and the story lines could be a lot tighter, but there is always enough drama on Gossip Girl to make it a good prime time soap. After a second season finale in which the voice of Kristen Bell got all of the main characters together and told them they were all Gossip Girl, we will now gear up for a third season where they all (or most) head off to college. Post-high school dramas can sometimes be made or broken after graduation, but since GG never spent much time in the classroom, I don't see many changes happening this season.

One Tree Hill
Finally! The loss of Chad Michael Murray and Hillarie Burton from the One Tree Hill cast has been a long time coming. Lucas could be dealt with, but Peyton was always one my least favorite characters on television. If this means more Nathan, Haley, Julian and Brooke, I will be very happy. Apparently, with Luke and Peyton leaving, they will do another time jump. Not of the five year variety, like last time, but I have heard a year or two. I liked the time jump last time, so I'm looking forward to seeing all of the changes that happened this time.

90210
After struggling through the first half of its inaugural season, the new 90210 started to turn itself around and came into its own down the stretch. As I've mentioned before, the link to the original Beverly Hills, 90210 brings the new version up a few notches, and without that link, I wouldn't have been watching it through the first 6 to 8 episodes. When we last left the Southern Cal crowd, Annie had hit someone with her car and there was a bit of a love triangle between Dixon, Silver and Ethan. The bad news is that Dustin Milligan's Ethan will no longer be on the show. The good news ist that Kelly Taylor will definitely back in the swing of things.

Melrose Place
The new 90210 did so well, wait did it? Anyway, The CW decided to bring back another 90s primetime soap classic, Melrose Place. Because I didn't watch any of the original, I'm not as excited for the start of this redux, but I'm still looking forward to it. The promo video spotlights a ton of drama. The problem to me is that none of the girls are that appealing. I hope the dudes step to the plate. I may be making this up, but I believe Michael from the original Melrose will be back in primetime. And that reminds me of an unbelievable Jerry Seinfeld quote. As the Melrose Place opening music plays and he just finished going through a lie detector sequence in which he tried to deny that he watched the show, he exclaims "Oh that Michael, he's so smug."

CBS Fall Preview

What we're excited for from CBS this fall.

Full fall lineup with recommendations can be found here.

The Mentalist
As the only procedural show that I have been able to watch an entire season of, The Mentalist does it for me for one major reason. Patrick Jane. This guy is an unbelievable character. As a consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation, Jane uses his mentalist abilities to solve crimes. It is not his abilities, but his cocky attitude and charm that pop off the screen each week. The cast of characters around him put the show over the top for me. Kirsten's sister from The O.C. and the Asian guy from the AT&T commercials are two of the best supporting characters out there.

Survivor
Although still not nearly as good as Big Brother, which this summer's latest installment of the houseguest reality show has proved, Survivor is the next best thing. CBS is really promoting the coming season hard, exclaiming that this fall's version of the survival competition will introduce the biggest Survivor villain ever. Although I'm not quite sure what a reality show villain is, it gets me excited. Is a villain someone that the cast hates, or someone the audience hates? Is it someone that is really mean, but the audience loves? Is it someone that is really obnoxious that the audience can't stand, but because they are so ridiculous you kind of like them? Whichever it is, it sounds good to me.

FOX Fall Preview

What we're excited for from FOX this fall.

Check out FOX's entire lineup with my recommendations here.

House
Season six begins this fall and Gregory House is not at Princeton Plainsboro. Instead he will start the season at a mental institution. I like anything that takes the plot away from the standard no storyline episode that House brings half of the time. Rumor has it that Chase and Cameron will be back on the team come next year and that only means good things. Since Chase left, I have actually started to like him. I'm sure that will change once he comes back.

The MacFarlane Trio
Family Guy is now in its eighth season, American Dad will begin its fifth, and The Cleveland Show comes to FOX for the first time. Family Guy will continue to take every third week off and throw out a dud of an episode, but there are plenty of unbelievable eps, see Bird Is The Word, to get me excited. American Dad is like Family Guy's little brother, but Roger the Alien is funny enough to keep my attention. I'm not a huge Cleveland fan, but if MacFarlane's at the helm, it shows some promise.

Brothers
This new sitcom starring Michael Strahan is bound to be bad, but when has being a bad show, ever stopped a show from being entertaining (see Full House, Las Vegas, One Tree Hill). Unlike those shows, Brothers may end up being bad in a bad way. But with ex-Giant Michael Strahan and Chubbs Peterson as main characters, I'll tune in for the first few episodes or so.

ABC Fall Preview

What we're excited for from ABC this fall.

Check out the entire ABC lineup with my recommendations here.

Brothers & Sisters
The only returning show on ABC this fall that I'm not upset about watching. Sure nothing ever exciting happens, and I don't like many of the characters, but Brothers & Sisters is always worth a watch. As long as Emily VanCamp continues to return as Rebecca Harper, I will continue to watch. And those of you wondering, my enfatuation with her has nothing to do with the beginning of her last name.

Flash Forward
Although I'm excited for the all new Flash Forward coming this September, I'm half expecting it to completely miss. Don't get me wrong, I love the promos for it, but I think they might outdo the show itself. The premise is great, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be an ordinary show ontop of a great premise.

Modern Family
When it comes to sitcoms, I don't care much for the premise. I deal in actors and writers. The writers' most recent job was the 2007 failed Back to You. The good news is that I enjoyed Back to You. When you add Ed O'Neil and Ty Burell (who starred in Back to You) I think it should be a quality comedy.

NBC Fall Preview

What we're excited for from NBC this fall.

Check out the entire NBC lineup and my recommendations here.

The Office
The winner of three Poolies last spring, including The Seinfeld
Award for Best Comedy Series, The Office returns for a sixth season after a bit of a shocker in May. Pam is pregnant, we think, but is that really that important for this show? Maybe. Will she be in the office for much longer? Will she be at home, creating new situations? Who knows, but as long as Michael, Dwight and the gang are on point, it should be another fantastically hillarious season in Scranton, PA.

30 Rock
After receiving two Poolies a year ago, 30 Rock comes back for a fourth season. It seems that many people, not just critics and awards shows, are recognizing the genius that is 30 Rock. As is always the case at the TGS with Tracy Jordan set, I'm expecting some big cameos this fall. If there are none, we can always count on Tracy, Jack and Liz to get the job done in New York.

Heroes
Easy, easy. I know what you're all saying. "This show is terrible!" Although I disagree to an extent, I have to admit that I still enjoy Heroes. It has gone extremely downhill since its fantastic first season, but there is always promise heading into a new volume of the superhero action series. The idea I'm most curious about is the Sylar/Nathan Petrelli combo character. Does one win out over the other? Knowing the show the way I do, they'll probably split into two people so that they don't have to get rid of either character.

Community
This new comedy, starring The Soup's Joel McHale, is about a dude who goes to community college. He was a lawyer with a degree from Columbia (the country), but obviously that's not working out anymore. Also starring Chevy Chase, Community shows a lot of promise in NBC's fall lineup.

NBC Fall Preview

NBC is definitely my favorite network. And of the big four, it always seems to get the worst ratings. There must be something about good shows that the average tv watcher doesn't like. Every year the Peacock puts out good new shows and then they get canceled because no one was watching them (case in point Studio 60 and Journeyman). This fall they're bringing in new shows, My Own Worst Enemy, Knight Rider, Kath and Kim, and Crusoe. Last year's best night of television was Monday's Chuck, Heroes, Journeyman so lets see if Christian Slater can step up to the plate and keep it that with with Own Enemy.

ABC Fall Preview

ABC came into their own four years ago when they started Lost, Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives. Here's the thing about ABC, do they have no sitcoms right now? I'm not sure if Samantha Who is a sitcom or not. If it is, then they have one. One! How do you survive on that? I like that ABC dramas do well in ratings without being of the noncontinuous CBS variety. There isn't much new programing this fall because there weren't that many cancellations. Those that were (carpoolers, cavemen) were replaced by midseason shows (eli stone).

Interest Level (6=really want to start this show...1=will never watch this show)
