30 Rock 701 Review - Dunston Checks In

Many shows seem to return to their former glory once an actual end is in sight. It gives the writers a new-found purpose, and that may be the case for 30 Rock here in season seven.

"Governor Dunston" continued the longer arcs of Jack trying to tank NBC and Liz's attempt at pregnancy nicely, while adding some hilarious moments with Tracy Morgan as the eponymous politician, along with a couple of guest appearances by Catherine O'Hara and Bryan Cranston.

Morgan as the aloof Vice Presidential candidate, who looked exactly like Tracy Jordan, was funny enough in and of itself - with the "okey dokey doo" and ripping his pants off at the podium - but the fact that it was a direct call back to Tina Fey as Sarah Palin made it even better.

The Voice 310 Review - The Battle Zone

The Voice was in full theft mode Tuesday night, as the new "steal" option was utilized once again by the coaches.

With an hour of airtime, we only got to witness three battles. I'm not complaining that we missed Celica vs. Lisa and Rudy vs. Charlie, because they probably weren't all that interesting, but maybe a little less practice time and they could afford to show ALL the battles!

Let's see who won and who lost this time around in the Battle Rounds...

Team Cee Lo - Cody Belew vs. Domo - "Telephone"

The Battle: It's difficult not to want Domo to fail due to the fact that there seems to be no limit to her arrogance. She definitely didn't fail nearly as much as she did in the blind auditions, but it was obvious once again that she just doesn't have the vocal chops to be interesting in this competition. Her performance wasn't enough to compete with Cody's voice, even if this song was way out of his comfort zone.
My Choice: Cody
Cee Lo's Choice: Domo Cody, wow I literally typed Domo while Cee Lo was speaking because I thought she was a lock.
Battle Grade: C+

The Voice 309 Review - Steal Away

The Voice began its Battle Rounds on Monday, but this time there was a new twist that benefited a few contestants and certainly everyone watching.

One of the major problems with the Battles in the past was that it seemed they would purposefully pit two really talented contestants against each other in order to create an awesome performance that would make that specific episode more enjoyable for fans.

The problem ended up being that after that great moment, one of those two extremely talented singers was completely out of the competition (see: Anthony Evans). That wasn't good for the future of the season. Thanks to the new "steal" option after one coach picks his/her winner, that issue is moot.

In essence The Voice gets to have their moment of cake, and then eat it too as the rest of the season goes on. Let's see how much better that made this week's first episode of season three battles...

Team Blake - Casey Muessigmann vs. Terry McDermott - "Carry On Wayward Son"

The Battle: I'm not one to disagree with Michael Buble, but why would you want Casey to change out of his country style if that's who he is? Both of these guys did really well, but it seemed like Casey was singing the song, while Terry just WAS the song. Just because Terry seemed more comfortable with the song, that doesn't mean that it was more impressive. The difficult task the Casey was given was not something to take likely.
My Choice: Terry
Blake's Choice: Terry
Battle Grade: A-

The Office 903 Review - You're Not Jim!

When I first saw the cold open as a promo for "Andy's Ancestry," I laughed my face off. When I saw it again, it was still hilarious. By the time this episode of The Office aired, the joke had lost most of its punch, but that doesn't mean it wasn't one of the best openings we've seen in a long, long time.

What a prank! Jim and Pam took some pretty great strides to get Dwight's goat with this one. Between informing their actor friend on the ins and outs of Jim's job, getting him Jim's voicemail password, Pam kissing him straight on the mouth and taking the time to shoot a brand new family portrait, I'd say this one might have taken the most planning ever.

Once the heart of the episode began there were a number of plots going on at once. The one that worked best was Nellie and Pam's bonding intertwining with Jim and Darryl's bonding. I know readers have taken issue with Nellie in the past, but I continue to enjoy her style of comedy. Her being a terrible driver...not funny. Nellie taking joy in lying to Andy...very funny.

30 Rock 701 Review - Tanking It

The seventh and final season of 30 Rock began this week, and "The Beginning of the End" started the abbreviated run out with a bang. Classic one-liners and references were joined by a hilarious plotline that ended with Jack and Liz teaming up to tank NBC.

The idea that Jack - and now Liz as well - wants to tank NBC so that Hank Hooper will sell the company to the guy who makes the only successful Easter Egg dyeing company in the world is funny in and of itself.

It also creates an atmosphere rich with opportunities for humor, like Jack coming up with ridiculous new shows for the network. God Cop may have had the most play here, but Homonym may have been funnier, and Tank It was certainly more idiotic.

The Voice 308 Review - Had Me at Thang

The extended teams of 16 may end up paying dividends down the road in the third season of The Voice, but for right now, they just seemed to make the blind auditions last much too long.

All four coaches added their final two team members on Monday night, which means next week we move onto the Battle Rounds. The superstars had some funny bits and the performers had some serious talent, but Carson Daly's awkward behavior was definitely the highlight of the night.

Between his "I knew it!" when the coaches turned for Nathalie - clapping like he's Brendan Fraser - and the look of such concern when he uttered "Come on Cee Lo!" when the coach wouldn't turn around, Carson made for a bunch of unintentional comedy on this final night of auditions.

Most of us were watching for the singers, though, so I digress. Let's take a look a how the coaches rounded out their teams, who has the best squad moving into the next round, and which was the most successful at securing performers throughout the season...

The Office 902 Review - Ready For My Close-up

Good for Roy! I'm not sure why The Office decided that he needed such a happy send off, but "Roy's Wedding" was indeed that.

Not only did he get married to a seemingly great girl, but he's also well off, and more importantly, he's making an effort to do special things for his now wife. He's grown up.

The way the sitcom worked Roy's surprise for his bride into the story - so that Jim and Pam could take issue with the fact that they had absolutely no secrets between them - was perfect. Sure, it didn't create many laughs, but watching Jim squirm about his giant secret was fun enough on its own.

Back at Dunder Mifflin, things started to get a bit crazy. After Nellie's charity bit pushed Dwight into agreeing to live under Taliban law, she had the brilliant idea to steal something, which would require Dwight to cut her hand off.

The Voice 307 Review - More to Come?

With the excitement of more seasons of The Voice on the horizon comes the disappointment of more blind auditions. Yup, they're not over. Only four contestants made it through on Tuesday night, which means each coach needs to more players before we can move onto the Battle Rounds.

Who is getting on a roll? And whose team is hurting late in the audition process? Let's take a look at what happened in the latest edition of the Blind Auditions by taking a look at the teams...

Team Xtina
Tuesday: 1-for-2, Total: 14-for-26 (54%)

Christina is now the most popular coach, as adding just one singer to her team on Tuesday moved her past Adam with a 54% success rate. That one singer was the first one we saw, Sylvia Yacoub. Born in Egypt, she not only had Xtina's dream hair, but she put forth a great performance of "Only Girl in the World."  She had some grit, plenty of attitude, and pushed Cee Lo to quiet the crowd so that he could whisper "I want you to be on my team." She chose Christina.

The Voice 306 Review - That's a Good Looking Dude

The teams are almost filled, which means it's almost time for the blind auditions to end on The Voice. As interesting as this format is, and as much as I enjoy a good sob story, I will be glad to move on to the next round of this season. These auditions get tiring.

What never gets tiring is Carson's excitement back stage, Blake's self-deprecating sense of humor and Adam's ability to persuade contestants to his team. As always, there was plenty of all three on Monday's episode, so let's see how it all played out...

Team Blake
Monday: 5-for-6, Total: 12-for-27 (44%)

Although Carson led the viewers to believe that Blake was just being selective up to this point in the competition, we all know that he just hasn't been able to reel in the singers, only succeeding 33% of time before this week. Monday was a completely different story as the country crooner went 5-for-6, picking up a wealth of talent for his squad.

The Office 901 Review - Is There a Belt Above Black?

The Office will go down as one of the best comedies ever to grace our television screens. Just because it hasn't been the same since Steve Carrell left, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be just as interested in how this all-time classic will end.

That's right, "New Guys" kicked off the final season of The Office, and there were some serious changes around the Dunder-Mifflin Scranton branch. Kelly's gone, Ryan's gone and a couple of young new guys are hanging around making our old favorites act a little crazy.

I enjoyed Clark Duke and Jake Lacy in Greek and Better With You, respectively, so I'm holding out hope that each brings something to the table in this final season. For now their characters of Dwight Jr. and New Jim simply helped propel some story lines.

Yeah, we know Dwight is always crazy, but between giving Dwight Jr. a noogie when he starts to think of him as a son, and everything that happens after the kid does well on the slack line, this may have been a new level of insanity. What on earth was he thinking with that bike-on-a-wire bit?

The Voice 305 Review - Benji Thang

We have come to the point in the The Voice's third season when the blind auditions should be tiresome and we just want to move on to the next round already. Fortunately for the good people at NBC, Blake Shelton is single-handedly making that impossible.

Although he didn't land a single contestant on his team on Tuesday, Blake was on fire all night long. Between his comments about Christina being abusive to her team members and making 10 artists quit the business just after meeting her, and then his remark about Benji not sounding like Adam because of his lack of jack assery, I couldn't have been more pleased with Mr. Shelton's performance.

Team Blake
Tuesday: 0-for-4, Total: 7-for-21 (33%)

Even though his comic stylings were on point, his ability to woo prospective team members was way off, losing out to all the other coaches, including a couple of one-on-one battles against Xtina and Cee Lo. By the end of the episode he even noted that he's going to need to try harder to garner more contestants from this point forward.

The Voice 304 Review - Cupid Kerfuffle

On the heels of news that Usher and Shakira will be replacing Xtina and Cee Lo on this spring's fourth season of The Voice - as the latter two take a hiatus for other projects - the Blind Auditions continued on Monday, showcasing plenty of talent that will vie for positions in this year's live shows.

Like always, there were a few featured artists who didn't make the cut on Monday. The most interesting was Cupid. Yes, that Cupid. The man who made the "Cupid Shuffle" tried out for The Voice and failed to turn around a single chair.

He came on the show to prove to everyone that he was more than just his pop phenomenon line dancing song. I get that. He wants to prove he has a voice, something that wasn't really showcased in his signature track. So what song did he choose to sing for his audition?

"Cupid Shuffle." What?!?!?! I could not believe it when I heard him say it. Was this seriously happening? It's a shame, though, because just judging by his performance, it sounded like he had a good voice. It's too bad he wasn't singing a song that gave the coaches an inkling of an idea about what this guy's talent level may or may not have actually been.

The Voice 303 Review - Moonwalk This Way

The first week of The Voice blind auditions has come to an end, and CeeLo continues to get overlooked by the aspiring singers. Hey, he did a heck of a job with Juliet Simms last season so I don't know what these contestants are so hesitant about.

Other than Mr. Green's failure to land team members, I took to major things away from Wednesday night's installment:

  1. I know some contestants take into account who turns around first when making their decision, but it isn't the only thing on their mind when deciding on a coach.  Please stop going on and on about how you were the first one to turn. They can see who turned around first, so spend that time pitching your passion for them instead of wasting it on a reminder that you hit your button before the other coaches.
  2. Carson Daly either still gets really excited about every single blind audition, or he's good at pretending to act like a little school girl back stage.  It was most noticeable when the first coach turned around for Nelly's Echo and with how closely he was watching the beginning of Nicole Nelson's performance. He's into it!

The Voice 302 Review - Tranquil Aquile

It was a short and sweet version of The Voice on Tuesday's second night of blind auditions. We saw only six performances during the hour, and I think I preferred that to the sometimes dragging two-hour version.

There was talk of a Harry Potter/Justin Bieber hybrid, Blake hanging championship banners in the arena and of course a couple of exciting performances during the episode. Let's take a look at how it all went down...

Team Xtina
Current Members: De'Borah, Devyn Deloera

Christina Aguilera picked up the first team member of the night, winning over 22-year-old bartender Adriana Louise after Louise won over all four of the coaches with "Domino." This was probably the most surprising event of the night, as I did not think this was all that special of a performance. The vocal sounded pretty pedestrian, and then there were some bum notes, so I'd be happy if I were one of the other three superstars.

The Voice 301 Review - Going Blind

The Voice returned earlier than normal for season three, but Blake Shelton's jokes, Christina Aguilera's cleavage and a boat load of talent seemed to not miss a beat during Monday's season premiere.

After the coaches put forth probably their best joint performance yet on the series - and we all had a good laugh at Cee Lo's newest wacky The Voice pet Lady the cockatoo - the contestants all had their chance to wow the coaches. Let's see who impressed us the most...

Team Blake
Last season's victorious coach Blake Shelton was coming in hot Monday night, picking up two of the first three singers shown on screen. First out of the gate was 35 year-old Scottish rocker Terry McDermott. Other than his cute little son, Terry didn't impress me all that much. He sure did wow the coaches though, as three out of four turned around for his version of "Baba O'Reilly." Blake's idea to just let Terry's accent propel him to the championship worked, as the first contestant picked the country star to lead him to the promise land.

This is Troy Barnes's second nomination and second straight win for best supporting character in a comedy series.  Here to discuss why Troy is such a great character is Poolie voter Jaydon.
_____________________________

With the axing of showrunner Dan Harmon and the exodus of many other core writers, season three will likely be considered the final “real” season of Community. Luckily, in fear of cancellation, the show ended on a note that could have worked as a series finale. Troy was one of the characters that felt as if he had completed his arc by season’s end.

This season Troy moved in with Abed, feuded and made up with him and sacrificed his life at Greendale for the good of his friends. While Abed threatened to slip deeper into a disturbing fantasy life, Troy matured while maintaining his whimsical side. In the much loved Remedial Chaos Theory, it’s Troy’s absence that brings about the dark timeline, suggesting his role as the heart of the study group.

Perhaps more importantly, Troy continued to be Community’s funniest character with moments like eating the candy cigarette, acting “normal” with Abed for Shirley’s wedding, employing a Southern accent to represent the European country of Georgia, his $60 windfall, transitioning from Inspector Spacetime roleplaying to spitting at a damsel, bubbe/boobie confusion, “all-terrain, dummy”, the pen pal call, bad copping and manly karate adventures.

This is two Poolies in a row for Troy but it’ll be a miracle if he gets the threepeat with new writers. However, Donald Glover is talented enough to keep it in the realm of possibility.

and the Poolie goes to...

1. Britta Perry (Community) 18 points
1st by Jaydon and T-time, 4th by Me

This is Britta Perry's first nomination and win for best female character in a comedy series.  In 2010, Britta was nominated for the character you most love to hate in a comedy.  Here to explain her rise to prominence, is Poolie voter, T-time.
___________________________________________________

As so often with Community, the things viewers are thinking wind up in the mouths of the characters. Never was this more apparent than when everyone from the study group to the priest that presided over Shirley’s wedding started calling Britta “the worst.” Until of course, the moment late this season when Troy let Britta in on the secret that we had all realized months ago. “You’re not the worst,” he told her in all sincerity. “You’re the best.”

It was true. Somewhere along the line of Community’s embrace of how awful a character Britta Perry was, she had become the best character on television. Part of this has to be credited to the writers. Realizing that they had written a character that was tough to like, they resolved to write her as annoying as possible. This was evident as early as the D&D episode of last year, where the group collectively groaned at Britta’s predictable outrage at the condition of gnomes in a made-up universe. But the more she became a parody of someone that would be absolutely insufferable in real life, the more she became an absolute joy to watch on the silver screen.

Much more of the credit has to go to Gillian Jacobs and her willingness to commit to the character. From the Me So Hungy dance (and its quasi call-back in the Me So Christmas dance) to deadpanning every line about being a psych major, Jacobs has executed her lines with comedic  timing that has verged on inconceivable. The pride in her voice when she announces that she can alter the crime scene photo to wild west colors.  The honest inquiry when she asks if Abed’s plan has to do with regionals. The comedy on Community usually requires a precise inflection. Whatever was asked for this year, Jacobs delivered.

And like the aforementioned dance, it hasn’t just been the dialogue that has set Britta apart this season. The awkward hug she exchanges with Troy while filming the dean’s commercial was fantastic. The constant peering over the shoulder of the psychiatrist while taking notes was one of the funnier moments of this season or any. I could go on mentioning moments indefinitely but we all saw this season of Community. It wouldn't be tough to argue that over the course of the year, Britta Perry gave us more than any other character on TV.

and the Poolie goes to...

1. Andy Bernard (The Office) 20 points
1st by T-time, Larry, and Matt, 2nd by Me

This is Andy Bernard's first nomination and win for the comedy character you most love to hate. Back in 2009, Andy was nominated for and lost by only one point in the best supporting character award.  Here to discuss how Andy Bernard went wrong is Poolie voter, T-time.
_______________________________________________

Remember when we loved The Office? It seems so long ago. But it was only twelve months ago that Poolie voters judged it to be the best comedy on television. Of course that was when Steve Carell still graced the program with his unique blend of humor and heart. We knew it would not be as good after Michael Scott got on that plane to Colorado, but we couldn’t have imagined it would fall apart completely.

The program’s fall from grace was quick and severe but it didn’t have to be. There was still a stable of talent in the cast. All they needed to do was spread the load. Go back to classic Jim/Dwight pranks. Give more screen time to Kevin and Ryan. This should have worked. It’s not what they did. The Office instead attempted to force the load once carried by Steve Carell onto one man. Bad idea. That one man was Ed Helms. Worse idea.

It’s safe to say that Andy Bernard, as portrayed by Helms, has destroyed this show. This is in large part because HE IS NOT FUNNY.  It’s also because he thinks that he is. He overdoes every bit. A perfect example can be found in the finale. Andy as the down-on-his-luck janitor had some inherit comedy. But Andy doesn’t know when to stop, pushing every bit until the viewer is just annoyed. STOP TRYING SO HARD. If he had just played that bit to its logical conclusion, it might have been good, but he can’t help himself. Frustratingly, that was one of Andy’s better moments this year.

The sadder part is that Erin, a formerly fun character was dragged down into the morass with him. They keep pushing this Andy-Erin relationship on us like it is something we should care about. For an audience to have a stake in a TV relationship, they need to feel for one of the characters. We never cared about Andy finding love. That was never part of his appeal(when he had any). They were matched up at first because of the jokes and then later it was just assumed we would care. This is the Parks and Rec approach. That’s not the way that The Office built Michael-Holly or Jim-Pam. It is the way that they ruined the affection we formerly had for Erin Hannon.

In the end, this is a comedy. All Andy Bernard needs to do is be funny. There was a time when he was. The Stamford version of the character was amusing in small doses. That time is long past. The Andy Bernard of the past few years was a tolerable annoyance. This year, his step into the bright lights has ruined a once beloved franchise.
