Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- Honorable Mentions

Yes, it is that time again. It's time for the Quiet Pool Perspective's take on power rankings. Every two months, here at The Pool, we like to let you know what you should be watching on the small screen. Just like in sports, an opinionated take on what is the best of the best is great for television. It's too bad that Tim Goodman is the only other one out there that I know of that puts out Power Rankings. His come out weekly, or any week that he remembers to do it, and that's a bit much. Every couple of months, the television landscape changes here at The Pool, and therefore we now come out with our November Power Rankings. So go grab a couple of boat drinks, turn on some reggae, and take a look at what you should be watching.
Horatio Sans, Chris Parnell and Chris Gethard of Big Lake
Honorable Mentions

Show- (last time)...red=moving down, green=moving up

Big Lake- (-) Tuesdays on Comedy Central
Although it is unlikely to get a second season, Big Lake deserves some recognition if only for Chris Parnell's fantastic performance over the 10 episode first season. If you enjoy his Dr. Spaceman on 30 Rock, you will die for his Chris Henkel on this show. He's absolutely ridiculous at all times and at no point does it cease to be hilarious. He could be the most underrated comedic actor on the market right now.

Eastbound and Down- (-) Sundays on HBO
I'll probably take heat for this, but I feel this season of Eastbound is a big let down. This is kind of a situation where the creators had a great idea for a funny character and had no idea how to write funny stories around him. The hilarity of Kenny Powers came out in full force over those first six episodes in season one, but this year I have not been impressed. Last week made a turn in the right direction when they began to play on his relationship with his dad. Seeing him so obsessed with Don Johnson was pretty hilarious.

Glee- (-) Tuesdays on FOX
I'm still shocked at how much critical attention gets paid to this show. It's not any better written than a show like Grey's Anatomy, in fact it's much more inconsistent. It doesn't get any more viewers than some of the top network dramas. Is it just because there's singing? I mean that's why I still give it as much attention as I do, but it's weird that the top critics still take time to write reviews on this mostly garbage show. Any show that can be split up into three distinct types based on which one of its three show-runners are in charge in that give episode, is completely ridiculous. Having said that, I still enjoy it...mostly for Santana though.

Katie Cassidy on Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl- (-) Mondays on The CW
The TV Show Girl, over at AOL's TV Squad, recently tweeted that she "gave up on Gossip Girl." While I have long since looked forward to watching it, it's still in my rotation. Sometimes I get behind by a week or two, but I always catch up on it. I'm glad I've stuck with it, because the story they're going to with Katie Cassidy's Juliet and Sam Page's Colin has me very intrigued. Why on Earth would she be going through all of this trouble to take down the characters we know on Gossip Girl? I have no idea, but unlike most of the stuff from the past few seasons, it's interesting.

Hawaii Five-0- (-) Mondays on CBS
I came for Scott Caan and the Hawaiian atmosphere, but I may be staying for CBS wonderboy Alex O'Loughlin. I never even tried his most recently failed projects Moonlight or Three Rivers, but I've been pleasantly surprised with his performance on Hawaii Five-0. Maybe CBS was right to continue to give this guy platforms. Maybe those other shows were just bad. He seems like a pretty big stud so far, and his relationship with Scott Caan has been great to watch so far.

Jersey Shore- (HM) Thursdays on MTV
Absolutely no question in my mind, Pauly D is the best thing about this show. Between "The cabs are here!" and his version of "It's tee shirt timeeee!" he is solid when it comes to yelling things. On top of that he's a stud, he never ruins things for other people, and he will blow up on you if you give him a chance. The Situation is great and all, but he went down the wrong path a few times this season, and I can't help but say he kind of embarrassed himself. This season, on the whole, could have been better. If they didn't make the entire first half of it about Ronnie and Sammie they would have been much better off.

League, The- (-) Thursdays on FX
Every time Jackie Boy tells me that The League was the funniest comedy of a give Thursday night, I can never tell if he's serious, joking, or somewhere in between. I was one of the only ones I knew enjoyed the second half of The League's first season, but now I feel like I'm the only one who isn't absolutely loving this second season. It might be a bit better than the end of last year, but it still hasn't been great. I was all about making the show more about fantasy football last year, because the non fantasy stuff was either ridiculously dirty, or ridiculously unfunny. This year the fantasy stuff is just killing me. They're doing the general comedy better, but every time there's a football story line I want to shoot myself in the head.

Sherlock and Dr. Watson
Sherlock- (-) Sundays on PBS
I just finished watching episode one of this three ep first season (writing Saturday). These Brits went with an interesting format; three one and a half hour episodes to start things off. I've never been one to watch things from the UK, but something about Sherlock Holmes intrigued me. The difference with this version of the famous story, is that our Sherlock and Watson are in modern day England. I really enjoyed the first installment and am absolutely looking forward to the next one. It will definitely be higher on my priority list next week, and it should be on your radar as well. If you like mysteries and Englishmen, you will probably love this.

Survivor- (15) Wednesdays on CBS
What a bad group of contestants can do to you huh? Or maybe what a couple of good ones can. The last two seasons featured Russell Hantz, last year's winner for the Terry Fator Award at the Poolies. This past spring we had an All-Star season hat had Russell, Boston Rob, Coach Wade and a variety of other greats. This season we have what? Jimmy Johnson out in week 2? A somewhat intriguing Jimmy T out a week after that? There is nobody left in this crew that I'm even rooting for to stay in the game. At any point I couldn't care who gets eliminated. That's not a good sign.

True Blood- (13) Sundays on HBO
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Maybe I'm being harsh by removing True Blood from the Top 20 entirely, but maybe I'm just making a statement. This last season was quite a crazy step down from the greatness of season two. Maybe now people will agree that Maryanne Forrester was one of the great evil bad guys of the decade. She helped bring True Blood as high as eight in the power rankings, and all these werewolves did was drop it off the list completely.

Also fallen out...Sonny With a Chance (18), Top Chef (20).

and the Poolie goes to...
1. Ashley (Entourage) 31 points (4th)
Here with his thoughts on Ashley from Entourage is Poolie voter Mags...

HBO’s Entourage gets a lot of hate for a variety of reasons. Some people complain that the show is boring or played out, others think the actors are no-talent dirtbags who don’t deserve their success. Personally, I can appreciate the show for what it is: a weekly 25 minute look at a bunch of bros living in Hollywood and killing it. I know nothing bad ever happens, the acting is horrible, the story generally sucks, and the chicks are way too hot for the guys. I don’t care much. Oh the little leprechaun loser Eric Murphy is hooking up with this dime Sloan? Good for him. I apply that perspective to most of the show, but something happened in the last season that just killed me.

After E breaks up with Sloan, he ends up with this random piece named Ashley. She sucks. Like way more than most chicks. She has a 5 head, gross hair, an ugly face and probably a lazy eye. She is also pre-pubescent. Her voice is annoying, and on top of all her physical flaws she is jealous and stupid. Just out of curiosity I Googled “ashley entourage.” Some highlights on the results:
1. Entourage: Ashley’s Not Going Away Soon
- Highlight: If you are sick and tired of what's-her-face (Ashley) as E's current flame on Entourage, then you're not alone.

2. ASHLEY FROM ENTOURAGE IS GROSS
- Highlight: That new chick they got on, this Ashley chick, is fugly.

3. Ashley has to Go!
- Highlight (from an Entourage forum): Ashley definetely has to go.. she is probably the most annoying character we have ever seen on entourage.. seriously…she looks like a 10 year old girl to me..
Now the guy who wrote the last highlight is clearly a bit of a RE, and he still gets it. I spent some solid time on Google and the whole internet hates this broad. At this point even if you don’t watch the show you hate her. I could lob hate grenades at this heinous crank (h/t Joe Bertoulli) all day. Presenting your winner for the 2010 Marissa Cooper Award: Ashley from Entourage.

Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- Honorable Mentions

Now that the Olympics are over many of our favorite shows are set to return. Plenty of new shows are also on the horizon. Let's see where The Perspective's Power Rankings stacks everyone up. January and February brought back plenty of series in the Top 20, including perennial number one LOST. I've also caught myself all the way up on a couple of cable gems (Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad) so things might look a bit different near the top this time around. A few shows that have missed the cut (Bored to Death, V, Eastbound) not because of failure to entertain, but for lack of episodes and too much time off. Without further ado here are the shows you should be watching, The Quiet Pool Perspective's March Power Rankings.

Honorable Mentions

Show- (last time)...red=moving down, green=moving up

Californication- (HM) Sundays on Showtime
Hank Moody and crew have been off since the last rankings but will return for a fourth season sometime in September. Here's hoping Sue Collini is no longer a part of the show.

Dexter- (-) Sundays on Showtime
I am currently halfway through the second season of this serial criminal action series, but I've seen enough to recommend it to anyone. I've heard that the most recent season four was very good and co-starred John Lithgow.

Gary Unmarried- (-) Wednesdays on CBS
It's obvious. It's corny. It's on CBS. Having said that, it's still entertaining. Jay Mohr is over the top, but his kid Tommy is subtly hilarious.

Glee- (HM) Wednesdays on FOX
Rachel Berry and the rest of the gang won't return from their mega long winter hiatus until April. Maybe they've had enough time to figure out what about this show works well and what doesn't (any drama having to do with Mr. Shue).

Gossip Girl- (HM) Mondays on The CW
Returning this month, let's hope that the loss of a couple of great guest stars in the fall, especially Hillary Duff, won't make the spring session of the teen drama falter.

Greek- (20) Mondays on ABC Family
The spring session of the college series has been subpar so far. For as much as I want to see Cappie and Casey together I feel like they would've been better off to leave it for the series finale. They're making it kind of bland for now.

House, MD- (HM) Mondays on FOX
As I've said, House is House. I'll continue to watch it for Gregory himself, but other than his interactions with different characters there's nothing else really going on here.

JONAS- (HM) Sundays on Disney Channel
The comedy will start back up for its second season this summer. How are they going to work Joe's new haircut into the story of the season?

Men of a Certain Age- (-) Mondays on TNT
Sure it is painfully slow at times, but the work of Ray Romano and Andre Braugher has been fantastic. It's hard to find better tv than Detective Frank Pembleton stuffing his face with Fiddle Faddles in the middle of the night.

Wizards of Waverly Place- (18) Fridays on Disney Channel
This show has the perfect combination of characters in my opinion. Between Alex's overall hatred toward everything, Max and Jerry's inability to take anything seriously, Justin's complete nerdiness and the mom's stern hand, it all just works.

Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- Honorable Mentions

As the winter hiatus is upon us, four months of the television season has passed us by. A lot has happened since The Perspective's November Power Rankings, so let's see where everyone stacks up at the beginning of 2010. These Bi-Monthly Power Rankings take into account both current and past performance. For example, although I have enjoyed Modern Family much more than 30 Rock this season, the NBC comedy stays on top of the ABC laugher because of its historical performance. Without further ado here are the Quiet Pool Perspective's January TV Power Rankings.

Honorable Mentions

Show- (last time)...red=moving down, green=moving up

Bored to Death- (HM) Sundays on HBO
Jonathan Ames and friends finished their short first season run a while ago and won't be back until late this year. It's hard to get a grasp on how good it really is, but what I've seen I've really enjoyed.

Californication- (20) Sundays on Showtime
Hank Moody and his girls recently finished their third season in fantastic fashion. Although Moody is a great character, the show itself isn't one that I can't wait to see week in and week out.

Eastbound and Down- (-) Sundays on HBO
Nobody knows when Kenny Power and crew will return to our television sets. Like Bored to Death, Eastbound only aired half a season to start its series run. Completely hilarious, but I'll hold back giving it higher praise until I can see them do it again.

Glee- (HM) Wednesdays on FOX
The singers come back on the air in April and will finish the season with nine more episodes. Although I hesitated at first, the dramedy/musical has won me over in a sense and I always look forward to the musical performances.

Gossip Girl- (19) Mondays on The CW
The boys and girls of the Upper East Side took a step forward this season when they highlighted Nate, Dan and newcomer Olivia, but kind of sputtered through the end of the fall season when Serena became the focus of the series.

Hannah Montana- (18) Sundays on Disney Channel
A fourth and final season will begin in 2010. Hannah has gotten better and better as Miley gets older and older. Her comic timing continues to improve, and Billy Ray has been a comic genius considering his absolute lack of acting chops.

House, MD- (14) Mondays on FOX
The story telling on House has fallen off the map for me. The season started on a high note with House in the mental hospital, telling more of a serialized story. Recently I have not looked forward to the same old procedural plots each and every week. Losing Kutner was brutal to the show and now without Cameron I don't see a return to the top any time soon.

Jonas- (-) Sundays on Disney Channel
The Jo Bros continue to rise up on my list of awesome dudes. I absolutely had my doubts going into my first viewing of Jonas, but the three brothers didn't disappoint when I watched most of the first season in marathon style one Sunday afternoon. Sure it is corny, but with my love of Danny McCoy and Las Vegas, you already knew I enjoy corny.

Parks and Recreation- (-) Thursdays on NBC
The Office-esque comedy came into its own in this, its second season. Amy Poehler has her moments, but it was the writers' ability to get Chris Pratt's Andy Dwyer into the Parks and Rec building after his broken leg healed. Now able to interact with all of the characters, Andy has proven to be a must see all on his own.

Sons of Anarchy- (-) Tuesdays on FX
The motorcycle gang action series just finished its second season on FX in December. Sure I've only experience half of the first season, but it shows so much promise that I'm giving it an honorable mention spot already. I only see Sons moving up as I continue to catch up.

Monday Musings- Serena In the Workplace

Gossip Girl
Obviously the Jenny and Eric parts were brutal, but let's talk about something important. How does Serena get a job as an aide to a Senator or Congressman? Whatever Tripp is, he shouldn't be taking on recently graduated high school students to be a part of his staff. And then he claims that Serena deserves this job/opportunity? Why? Because she graduated from high school and skipped out on going to Brown? She frolicked through Europe with God knows who. This is the person that deserves a well respected job, that a college graduate would kill for? I don't get it. Chuck I understand. He inherited his father's company and has millions of dollars, he can do what he wants. Serena is rich sure, but it's not her money. She should really educate herself before trying to get jobs in the real world.

Monday Musings- Serena Bets the Bluff

Gossip Girl
The three-girl dynamic that was the main focus of this week's episode was just fantastic. Blair, Vanessa and Olivia are all completely different and the way way they battled each other had a great chemistry about it. First you have good old Blair, who is as brutally conniving as they come. Then there is the new girl, Olivia, who seems to be as genuinely nice as we've seen on this show. And finally Vanessa, who back in season one seemed much like Olivia, but has taken on parts of Blairs deceitfulness as the year's have progressed. This week she was a very bad girl in the way that she treated both her roommate, Olivia, and her best friend, Dan.

It's sad to see the awfulness that is Serena is dragging Nate into these awful story lines with her. This week Nate and Serena went to a poker game in which Serena had to play because the opponents wouldn't allow Nate in the game. Here's my question, do the writers for these shows not have anyone consulting them in specific areas. Whoever wrote this ep has never played poker. They might have seen poker on tv or in the movies, but they don't know how bluffing or tells work. Even if this PJ character had changed his tells, it wasn't going to help Serena's cause. NOBODY BLUFFS ON A CALL. I know I've seen this before on tv. If you want to beat someone who is bluffing, you wait until they make their move (it might be pushing the stacks) and then YOU CALL HIM. The nerve of these writers to think they can get one past the kid.

Monday Musings- Guest Gossip Girls

House
Lets start with a quote from Alan Sepinwall's review of the episode.

He said, about the two hour season premier that "rather than revitalizing my interest in the show in general, it's elevated my interest in House himself and made the other characters and the medical mysteries feel even more superfluous than before."

I agree whole heartedly with Mr. Sepinwall's comments. I was unbelievably pumped for this season of House after the premier saga that took place at the mental institution. It was all House, all the time. Now that we are back in the flow of what the show has always been, I've lost all excitement. Whoah, another crazy medical story that they're going to try and figure out! It's getting old for me. And the other characters? My God, Foreman is terrible. I won't even be sad to see Cameron leave. And I'm sure Chase will turn back into the lame excuse for a character he was as a regular pretty soon. My expectations have dropped dramatically in the last two episodes.

Gossip Girl
For me, this week's ep was just an exclamation point on how good the start to this, the third season has been. It seems that, behind what I assume is Josh Schwartz's mind, the show has transitioned very nicely from high school to college (or not college). I enjoyed the hiccups everyone was having as they left high school and had to learn to deal with the troubles of college in NYC, or not wanting to leave as is the case with Serena.

Quick notes on those not in the main storyline...Jenny was actually tolerable in the ep, as her teaming with Chuck brought her closer to his personality. The little that Nate was in this week's ep (which is a travesty) was fantastic. He's so believable as a character. As he sits at the table waiting for Dan to ask out the extremely famous movie star, played by Hilary Duff, he is beside himself at how ridiculous it is that Dan has no idea who she is. Then once Dan leaves with her, he gives the fist pump and in a sigh of relief exclaims, "oh my God." This dude is real sweet. And then we have Serena, who was TERRIBLE as always.

My biggest knock on this show used to be that I didn't like many of the characters, especially the girls. To start this season they have packed a punch, bringing back Georgina, bringing in Joanna Garcia as Bree Buckley and now Hilary Duff as Olivia Burke. Olivia's character was fantastic. No matter how many shows or movies I see it in, the story line of a famous person pretending to not be famous, is great every single time. It's completely played at this point, but I still enjoy it. Here's what makes this an acceptable plot...If I were to see Kristen what's her name from the Twilight movies on the street, I would have absolutely no way of recognizing her. I don't know how long Duff is staying on, but I'm hoping for it to be a while, 'cause she was great.

CW Fall Preview

What we're excited for from The CW this fall.

View the entire fall lineup with recommendations here.

Gossip Girl
Hardly any of the characters are sweet and the story lines could be a lot tighter, but there is always enough drama on Gossip Girl to make it a good prime time soap. After a second season finale in which the voice of Kristen Bell got all of the main characters together and told them they were all Gossip Girl, we will now gear up for a third season where they all (or most) head off to college. Post-high school dramas can sometimes be made or broken after graduation, but since GG never spent much time in the classroom, I don't see many changes happening this season.

One Tree Hill
Finally! The loss of Chad Michael Murray and Hillarie Burton from the One Tree Hill cast has been a long time coming. Lucas could be dealt with, but Peyton was always one my least favorite characters on television. If this means more Nathan, Haley, Julian and Brooke, I will be very happy. Apparently, with Luke and Peyton leaving, they will do another time jump. Not of the five year variety, like last time, but I have heard a year or two. I liked the time jump last time, so I'm looking forward to seeing all of the changes that happened this time.

90210
After struggling through the first half of its inaugural season, the new 90210 started to turn itself around and came into its own down the stretch. As I've mentioned before, the link to the original Beverly Hills, 90210 brings the new version up a few notches, and without that link, I wouldn't have been watching it through the first 6 to 8 episodes. When we last left the Southern Cal crowd, Annie had hit someone with her car and there was a bit of a love triangle between Dixon, Silver and Ethan. The bad news is that Dustin Milligan's Ethan will no longer be on the show. The good news ist that Kelly Taylor will definitely back in the swing of things.

Melrose Place
The new 90210 did so well, wait did it? Anyway, The CW decided to bring back another 90s primetime soap classic, Melrose Place. Because I didn't watch any of the original, I'm not as excited for the start of this redux, but I'm still looking forward to it. The promo video spotlights a ton of drama. The problem to me is that none of the girls are that appealing. I hope the dudes step to the plate. I may be making this up, but I believe Michael from the original Melrose will be back in primetime. And that reminds me of an unbelievable Jerry Seinfeld quote. As the Melrose Place opening music plays and he just finished going through a lie detector sequence in which he tried to deny that he watched the show, he exclaims "Oh that Michael, he's so smug."

The Poolie Goes To

1st. Julie Taylor (Friday Night Lights)- 16 points...(2nd)
And here is what I have to say about one Miss Julie Taylor...

Julie Taylor is the daughter of the football coach and principal at Dillon High. We are three seasons into Friday Night Lights and it has been a rocky timeline for this award winner. Early on, I enjoyed her character moderately. Julie was quiet but clever and defiant. She hated football and she hated Texas. It was when she began to fall for Saracen, the socially awkward quarterback, which allowed Julie to come into her own. She absolutely dominated the relationship, which was fun early but proved troublesome after she kicked him to the curb.

Something happened in season two which got me to genuinely dislike Julie. Whether it was breaking up with Saracen to date the two older dudes, or complaining non-stop, I definitely would’ve put her on the characters I hate list back in ’08.

But as the gang from Dillon, TX returned to the screen this past January, we got to witness a retro but improved version of Julie. She had lost her complaining attitude and has fallen back into place with Saracen. Jules has definitely turned the corner as a great character in season three, which was portrayed by her making fun of JD’s trophies with Matt, convincing Coach Taylor to try Saracen at wide receiver, and getting close with Gramma Saracen. I expect great things from Julie in season four.

ugh a series of peaks and valleys, but this guy has been in Death Valley since day one. Every time he stepped on camera he was either complaining about something or bringing everyone down with his depressing mood. So you had a near fatal injury on the field that ruined your chance at a professional football career and you want to be all emotional and sad? Come talk to me after you sit in a cubicle for 70 hours a week. You’ll find out what real pain is. However, towards the end of the season he turns his life around by getting a job in NYC, which allows him to be close to the girl he knocked up. Things finally seem to be working out for him, and you know what? I’m happy, but not because things are looking better for him. It means he has essentially been written out of the show. Good luck Street, nobody cares.

CW Mondays

The CW is really the only network showing prime time teen soaps right now. A genre made loved by many with Beverly Hills, 90210 in the 90s and again with The O.C. in the mid 2000s is being held alive by One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl. This year, the new 90210 and Privileged will make it four currently on the air. Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill will begin this Monday at 8 and 9 respectively.

Gossip Girl enters its second season, after being one of the most buzzed about shows of last year. First off, it is no 90210 or OC but it is definitely worthy of a watch. The drama is great, although sometimes the material is a little bit too ridiculous for my taste. Blake Lively is really cute as Serena but most of the characters on the show I could take or leave, mostly leave. I do enjoy the bad boy/rich snob, Chuck Bass.

One Tree Hill enters its sixth season, but I'm sad to say I am only half way through season two on the dvd set. If this show continues to improve as most shows do, I would say that it has to be much better than Gossip Girl. In most shows, as you might have noticed from my post "Top 50 TV Characters," I don't usually like female characters. In One Tree Hill I thoroughly enjoyed Haley in season one, and love Brooke in season two. Now don't get me wrong the two main characters, Lucas and Nathan Scott are very decent guy characters. There's something about Lucas that makes him seem very real as a dude. He's somebody that I would hang out with if I lived in Tree Hill, NC. That's something I couldn't say about The OC's Seth and Ryan. Also a show that is essentially centered around basketball has to be a plus for a sports fan.

Gossip Girl Here

I just finished watching the introductory season of gossip girl and i enjoyed it more than i thought i would. It's on CW so i wasn't expecting much. Being co-created by Josh Schwartz of O.C. fame, it is easy to make comparisons. The main character, Dan, is no Seth, and Dan's dad, Rufus, is definitely no Sandy Cohen. What makes it better is how much less i hate Serena than i did Marissa. Bad boy, Chuck, is a great addition to the cast, as he brings more thrill to the show.

I'm looking forward to watching next season, while adding the new 90210 spinoff and the new palm beach show to my CW lineup.

Obviously here is my character rankings...

1.Nate
2.Chuck
3.Rufus
4.Blair
5.Dan
6.Vanessa
7.Lily
8.Serena
9.Georgina
10.Bart
11.Eric
12.Jenny
