Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- Honorable Mentions

There has been a lot of tv going on as of late, and since I am as busy as ever, I am extremely far behind on plenty of shows. To be specific, as I write this intro on Saturday, I am 48 episodes behind on shows that I am currently watching. I have also quit on more than a couple shows in the past month, which if you know me, you realize is a difficult task in itself. At the beginning of February, I skipped the regularly scheduled Poolies Watch, but nothing was going to stop me from putting the Bi-Monthly Power Rankings into the Pool for the 10th straight edition. As always, the Quiet Pool Perspective Power Rankings take into account both current and past performance. The honorable mentions are not necessarily my next ten favorite shows, but rather those that deserve mentioning at this time. So without further ado, here are the March Bi-Monthly Power Rankings. Enjoy.
Show- (last time)...red=moving down, green=moving up

The Amazing Race- (HM) Sundays on CBS
This All-Star season has brought back plenty of my favorite teams from the past three years or so, including the Globetrotters, the Cowboys, and Dr. Ned Shneebly-ba-deebly and his dad. But it also has brought back the 2009 winners of the Crazy James Zinkand Award for worst reality contestants, Margie and Luke. No one wanted to see them back on the show! What on Earth were you thinking?

American Idol- (-) Wednesdays and Thursdays on FOX
The first live show of Idol begins tonight and surprisingly I'm still as into it as ever. I will no doubt be disappointed as the weeks go on, but I am thus far impressed with the judging team. I am pretty ambivalent towards JLo, but I really like Steven Tyler. Switching those two for a Simon that had gotten extremely bored, a ridiculous Ellen, and Kara - who I hated with all my being - seems like a pretty fair trade. If Simon from the first five seasons was in the mix, then I'd be really upset, but he lost his mojo a bit towards the end.

Californication- (20) Sundays on Showtime
I have yet to watch this week's episode, but I have been a little disappointed in the season thus far. Maybe I was overrating because last year's finale finished in just spectacular fashion, because other than Hank's usual charm, nothing has been exciting in season four.

Cougar Town- (-) Wednesdays on ABC
Nothing has made me realize more that Cougar Town was actually a good show than watching Mr. Sunshine after Modern Family. A show that similarly started out awful, Cougar Town did grow into itself and was really great this second season.

Episodes- (-) Sundays on Showtime
The Mat Lablanc comedy finished its seven episode run last week and it was rather mediocre. There were a few decent bits here and there, but the main problem was that neither of the main characters were remotely interesting or likable. You can be awful and likable - see: Larry David - but this woman Beverly was nothing of the sort. I honestly wanted to slap her through the television screen every scene she was in. It was not a good year for Friends comebacks.

Parenthood- (-) Tuesdays on NBC
I had a difficult time keeping this show out of my top twenty. There have been a bunch of great episodes in a row, thanks in part to Michael B. Jordan's appearance as a much more enjoyable character than his Vince on Friday Night Lights.

Perfect Couples & Traffic Light- (-) Thursdays on NBC & Wednesdays on FOX
These two get one spot because they are basically the same show; three couples at different points in their respective relationships. I'm really enjoying both shows. Roy from The Office is killing it on Traffic Light, but I'm not two big on the other two guys in that one. The reason I was excited for Perfect Couples, Kyle Bornheimer, is one of the worst parts about it at this point. There's really nothing special about either of these, but they're nice enough shows to spend 21 minutes per week on.

Shameless- (-) Sundays on Showtime
I am currently a couple eps behind on this Showtime drama, but I've been enjoying it thus far. Down on their luck family scraping by isn't exactly a revolutionary story, but their spin on it has been interesting enough. I really enjoy Fiona as the quasi-matriarch of the family, and it is always kind of ridiculous to see William H. Macy as a stumbling drunk.

Survivor- (-) Wednesdays on CBS
Like I stated in my last post about the show, I have high hopes for this cast of characters. Agent Phil is getting weekly spots with Joel McHale on The Soup, so that is a good sign.

Wizards of Waverly Place- (-) Fridays on Disney Channel
As the current gold age of Disney Channel gets closer and closer to an end - with Jonas and Hannah Montana now off the air, and Wizards and Sonny With a Chance to follow shortly - David Henrie, Selena Gomez and crew are really making it difficult on me. Justin Russo is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters on television and this recent gimmick with the angels has been a joy. They're dealt with vampires, zombies, werewolves, and now angels. What mythical creatures will be next to take on the Russos?

Fallen out of the Top 20...Friday Night Lights (6, finished its run)
Now that it has finished its run on DirecTV, I decided to take Friday Night Lights out of the rankings. I never got a chance to write about the finale, so I'll take a quick moment here to mention how awesome it was. T-time tweeted something following the last episode that really resonated with me. "FNL finale has to be one of the most satisfying conclusions in memory." I completely agree. It wasn't the best finale I've seen...I mean wasn't even close to the Lost finale (begin shouting argument now), but it was definitely the most satisfying. You cannot argue with the way they ended the show. Just fantastic decisions all around. Deciding where to leave each characters story was perfect. Great stuff by the people at Friday Night Lights. I will definitely miss this show.

Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- Honorable Mentions

Even though most prime time television has been on hold for the holidays, and I've been watching The Santa Clause 2 for most of December, that doesn't mean things don't change in the Quiet Pool Perspective's Bi-Monthly Power Rankings. My first ever post on this blog was the Pre-Season TV Power Rankings in September of 2007. Three series from the top ten on that list are currently in the top ten as we begin 2011. As always, the January edition of the Pool's Power Rankings take into account both past and current performance. I am not a prisoner of the moment, but I do take the current state of a series into account. Enjoy and feel free to disagree with me, as I know most of you do.
We begin, per the usual, with the honorable mentions. These shows are not my ten favorites after the top 20, but rather a list of shows I feel deserve a mention as we head into the next two months of tv watching. Whether they have improved, gotten worse, or are merely returning from a long hiatus and thus need to be talked about, these shows are getting a mention at the Pool.

Show- (last time)...red=moving down, green=moving up

30 Rock- (12) Thursdays on NBC
I was definitely a little too quick on the draw, moving 30 Rock up to 12 back in November, but I may be a little too harsh dropping it off the list completely this time around. It has been better than last season, but still not as good as the other three NBC comedies (no, I'm not counting Outsourced). 30 Rock returns on Thursday, January 20 at 10:00 PM.

The Amazing Race- (-) Sundays on CBS
Flight Time and Big Easy on Amazing Race
The Amazing Race is a great show to have on while you're doing something else. And this season should be better than normal for a couple of reasons. First, it will finally be making the move to HD, and second, it is an All-Star season. Many of your favorite contestants are back, including the Globetrotters and the Cowboys. The Amazing Race returns Sunday, February 20 at 8:00 PM.

Archer- (-) Thursdays on FX
Archer has received plenty of critical acclaim since its first season premiered sometime last year. It is not my favorite comedy out there, or even my favorite animated series, but there are definitely some good bits every now and again. Archer returns on Thursday, January 27 at 10:00 PM.

Greek- (-) Mondays on ABC Family
In the next couple of days here, Greek will begin airing its final season. While it is not of the same popularity or quality of a show like Lost, I am glad that it took the same strategy of ending on its own accord. Since they knew that this would be the end for our friends at Cyprus Rhodes, let's hope everything cleans up nicely by the time it finishes. Greek returns on Monday, January 3 at 9:00 PM.

Hannah Montana- (-) Sundays on Disney Channel
This is epic people. If wikipedia is correct, there are only two episodes left in the history of Hannah Montana. After that, the only time we'll get to see Miley Cyrus is when she's taking bong hits on TMZ. She's already told the world her secret, so where will the two part series finale, titled "Wherever I Go", take Miley Stewart and the rest of the gang? Hannah Montana returns on Sunday, January 9 at 8:00 PM.

Human Target- (-) Wednesdays on FOX
Cast of Human Target
I am still two episodes behind on Human Target, which proves that I can't be THAT in love with it, but it still deserves to be given a chance (if you watch the show, you'll get the pun in there). If you like action, you will like Human Target. Now that former Chuck writer Matt Miller is in charge, I see this second season taking a step up in both comedy and overall story. Human Target returns on Wednesday, January 5 at 8:00 PM.

Men of a Certain Age- (-) Mondays on TNT
Sometimes I have a difficult time deciding if Men of a Certain Age is great television or something is just there. It can be a bit boring at times, but the characters are so very rich that it is tough to look away. Ray Romano continues to shine in the lead role of Joe Tranelli, but Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula have yet to live up to the billing I gave them before the series started. Men of a Certain Age continues Monday, January 3 at 10:00 PM.

Nikita- (-) Thursdays on The CW
I am definitely a few eps behind on Nikita as well. There is nothing about this show that is making me tune in every week, but when I have some down time it is a pleasant enough show to stick on the tube for 45 minutes. If you can get past Shane West's Batman-esque voice then it is enjoyable. Maggie Q definitely isn't what people were playing her up to be, but Lyndsy Fonseca's Alex has more than made up for it. Nikita returns Thursday, January 27 at 9:00 PM.

The Ricky Gervais Show- (-) Fridays on HBO
Animated Ricky Gervais and crew
Karl Pilkington is a buffoon. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant laugh at his ridiculous stories. If this sounds remotely interesting to you, then you'll love The Ricky Gervais Show. Taken straight from Gervais's podcast, the show puts the three guys in animation and uses the cartoons to give pictures to Karl's wacky stories. The Ricky Gervais Show returns on Friday, January 14 at 9:00 PM.

The Sing Off- (-) Winters on NBC
The Sing Off got a ratings bump in its second season, and why not? It has a great format and a ton of great talent. While Ben Folds didn't live up to his first season excellence as judge, the second season of the a capella show was still fantastic. It's short. It's sweet. The Sing Off doesn't drag on and on like American Idol. It gets you the music and gets out. Nobody gets hurt. The Sing Off may or may not return next December.

Also fallen out of the Top 20...The Event (20) and Terriers (Cancelled)

and the Poolie goes to...
1. Aaron Kelly (American Idol)
17 points (4th)

Here with his thoughts on Aaron Kelly is Poolie voter, Rizzo...

Aaron Kelly is the type of person that needs to be thrown in a locker, every three days for at least two years. Nothing about him is cool. If you’re a good singer on American Idol, you can be liked even if you not a very cool person. But if you suck, and you’re a loser, well, then you’re Aaron Kelly.

Aaron Kelly brought nothing to the table, in my opinion he was the worst singer for at least five weeks in a row. I wanted him to go home every single week. The difference between Kelly and Tim Urban was that Urban knew he was a bad singer. He was happy to be insulted and thus made himself more likable every week he survived. Tim Urban made a mockery out of the system by being by far the worst singer, and hanging on week after week. Kelly made me wonder who could possibly be voting for this scrub.

Personality wise Aaron Kelly reminds me of Dwight Howard. I know you might find this to be far fetched but hear me out. Dwight Howard thinks he is hysterical, it’s like one person 15 years ago told him he was funny and he has been riding it out ever since. Sportscenter commercials are always funny, but his is horrible. His Superman shtick is so old I can’t stand to hear it anymore. Now let’s focus on Kelly so you can see the similarities. Aaron Kelly is young, and someone early in his life told him that he was an amazing singer. Let’s make sure we are all on the page, Aaron Kelly is not a good singer, he will never amount to anything and in the weakest season of Idol in recent memory he will still not be remembered.

To be popular at Kelly’s age you have to be super cute (Justin Bieber, no homo) and have a voice that is decent enough to edit in the studio to sound amazing. You also have to be versatile. Can you even fathom an Aaron Kelly feat Ludacris single. No, you can’t, because that would be the worst song ever.

I am not an Aaron Kelly fan and never will be I really hope you were not one of the people voting for him every week.

The Kellie Pickler Award- Female Reality Contestant

Named For: Kellie Pickler, finalist on American Idol Season Five
Awarded To: The best female reality competition contestant from
June 1, 2009 - May 31, 2010
Last Year's Winner: Sugar Kiper- Survivor

Place. Contestant (Show) Points (My Vote)

10. Laura Crosby (Big Brother) 2 points

9. Sandra Diaz-Twine (Survivor) 2 points

8. Joanna Krupa (Superstars) 2 points

7. Crystal Bowersox (American Idol) 7 points

6. Amanda Kimmel (Survivor) 7 points (4th)

5. Caite Upton (Amazing Race) 11 points (2nd)

4. Susan Feniger (Top Chef) 13 points

3. Didi Benami (American Idol) 15 points (5th)

Runner-Up
2. Jordan Lloyd (Big Brother/Amazing Race) 15 points (3rd)

and the Poolie goes to...
1. Parvati Shallow (Survivor)
27 points (1st)

Here with his thoughts on Parvati Shallow is Poolie voter Tyson...

It’s rare that someone I voted for ends up winning one of these awards, so I will give you the four reasons she got my vote, which, I assume, are the same five reasons she got other’s votes:

1. I am a huge fan of people who use physical attractiveness to get what they want and Parvati managed to bewitch several of last season’s males. Everyone kept saying that Russell had fallen under Parvati’s spell and really who can blame him. She’s definitely island hot, not sure about real world hot, but island hot…definitely. Note: If I were ever to go on survivor I would require all female alliances to spend one night of naked cuddling with me…let’s see where your loyalties really lie.

2. Her name is spelled Parvati but is pronounced poverty. The “r” has cast off all pronunciation rules and decided to make its presence felt right before the “ti”. Parvati has a rogue “r” and that definitely does not grind my gears.

3. During the challenge where survivors had to hold their arms straight out in order to push two cylinders against some wood, several of the female challengers were sporting enough armpit hair to make 12 year old boys everywhere green with envy. But, when the camera panned to Parvati…smooth as a Siamese cat.

4. She used to box while in college. Punching people in the face is cool and if you don’t think so then I’ve got a fresh knuckle sandwich with your name on it.

by Tyson Brazell

if you would like to hear Tyson's fifth reason for voting for Parvati feel free to ask him for it as it is too inappropriate for the Pool.

Amazing Race- It Was So (Big) Easy

My favorite duo throughout this season of The Amazing Race has been the pair of Harlem Globetrotters we know as Flight Time and Big Easy. They're fun loving, boisterous at time, and always out for the W. As the weeks have gone on and on it has become more apparent that Big Easy was holding the team back. Whether it was him not being able to paddle a boat, hardly being able to climb a ropes course, or taking forever to find a miniature mandolin at an opera house, he has struggled as of late. Flight Time has not once yelled at him, or fought with him to do better (a rarity for a contestant on a reality show). This week it all came to an end when Big Easy made the worst decision I've seen on the show. It was the biggest mistake, because last season's Jen decided to stop for a bathroom break on her run to the final pit stop, but it was the worst decision in my mind.

First off the dude had five letters...R N A F Z...maybe it is because I watched Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon on Saturday Night Live, or because my dad watched a lot of NYPD Blue when I was a kid, but when I saw those letters, FRANZ was the only think I could see (and I could see it right away). Ok so maybe he wasn't a fan and he couldn't understand that it was that easy, but still there are only so many combinations of letters. So he had been working on it for two hours or so, beside himself with how long it had taken him, and one of the gay brothers finally figures it out. He leaves Big Easy with the fact that it starts with an F. Now he only has four letters to figure out what the answer is, R N A Z. After what the editing made it seem was only a half hour or hour later, he decides to give up and take a FOUR HOUR PENALTY!!!! Are you kidding me?!?! Keep guessing! Sooner or later you SHOULD come up with the right combination of letters to get FRANZ. But no, Big Easy tells Flight Time that he decided to take the penalty and wait the four hours to continue to the next challenge even though he knew they were currently in last place. Flight Time didn't complain about this idea. He encouraged his partner and they went forward with a positive outlook. You gotta be kidding me. These guys, as fun as they were to watch at times, did not deserve to win this thing.

Sunday Speculations- Wes Andersonian Bored to Death

Bored To Death
I wish I had caught up on Bored to Death by last Sunday, because that ep was the best of the season. This week's was good, but The Case of the Stolen Sperm didn't compare to The Case of the Beautiful Blackmailer.

My first thought after watching the first couple episodes...very Wes Anderson-esque. The dry, subtle comedy felt like a mixture of Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. The lead character, Jason Schwartzman's Jonathan Ames, is somewhere between Schwartzman's Max Fischer of Rushmore and Luke Wilson's Anthony of Bottle Rocket to me. As a fan of Wes Anderson's films, I have enjoyed Bored to Death thus far. My favorite Wes Andersonian part from this week's ep was when Ames quickly bought flowers at the market handed them to his ex-girlfriend, stated, "You forgot these," and ran away. So good.

With basically three major characters, each one of them brings something completely different to the table. Ted Danson is having a great season, shining as Ames's boss here, and having a stellar episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm a while back. In The Beautiful Blackmailer, Danson's George Christopher was fantastic at being stoned and funny, something the third dude has failed to do thus far.

Zach Galifianakis plays Ames's best friend Ray. Although he didn't excel in the pot smoking scene with George, Ray has had his moments early in the season, but doesn't come close to the other two guys in my opinion.

Final note...It's really getting ridiculous that Hollywood keeps stealing my brothers' ideas. First it was T-time's tv show about fantasy football and now it is JJ's idea that it is funny to order a cheeseburger- no cheese. The kid has been ordering that way since he was 10, and it's never not funny. My personal favorite is the Big Mac with cheese, no cheese.

Amazing Race
Flight Time and Big Easy continue to shine as two of the best contestants I've seen on The Amazing Race. Last week they were berating a girl that was afraid to go down a water slide, and this week they were just getting down with some Dutch Dancing. They're fun, they're competitive and they've got a chance to win this thing.

These poor poker playing girls. I've hated them since the beginning, so it was nice to see them finally get eliminated this week. The, what do you call it? Road Block? When the teams have to choose one task or another. These two weak girls had no chance at either thing and it was hilarious. First it was a long hole of Dutch Golf, in which they had to finish in eight strokes...They didn't get halfway down the fairway in eight strokes. The other side of the Road Block began with one of those carnival games where you slam down the mallet to ring the bell. After over 70 tries, the girls finally gave up. The part that had me screaming at the tv was that they weren't even trying to swing the mallet hard! It was like watching Zoolander in the coal mines they were acting so dainty with that thing. Embarrassing.

Sunday Speculations- Curb Has a Little Chinese

Family Guy
So our good friend Seth MacFarlane decided to rip on Disney in this week's episode. As Stewie and Brian were making their way through all of the different Universes, they fell upon the Universe in which everyone is drawn as a Disney cartoon. As one of the biggest Disney guys out there, I loved it. MacFarlane captured the true essence of Disney animation and it was awesome. He really didn't trash on Disney at all, except for the final dig that Disney hated Jews. Peter was my favorite because reminded me of Gaston's lackey, Lefou, from Beauty and the Beast. All in all it was a good start to the season.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
We got the first "Pretty, pretty, pretty" of the season during this episode, but that wasn't even close to the best part of the episode for me. It's the subtleties to Leon's comedy that drive me crazy. At the end of the episode, when Loretta and the rest of the Black family is driving away from LD with steam coming out of their ears, Leon shows up at the driveway next to Larry. After LD explains to him that there was a huge blow up and Leon's whole family is leaving and never coming back, Leon explains calmly, "That's some sh*t." Larry, wanting to make sure Leon is going to join his fam, prods, "Now you're going tooo...?" And Leon steals the show with "Go upstairs and eat this f*ckin' Chinese food...in my room." Fantastic.

Amazing Race
Two teams have garnered my affection after the two-hour season premier. Zev and Justin are a dude with Asperger's syndrome (Zev) and his friend Justin. Zev has already given me more laughs than anyone from a year ago. His boy Justin is just the straight man at this point. Flight Time and Big Easy, the Harlem Globetrotters seem laid back, but once they found out the poker playing girls lied to everyone the claws started to come out. I hope both these pairings go a long way.

Best comp of the ep, Japanese Game Show. The energy from the fans and the host was fantastic. I hated that this comp was basically luck. Whenever the roulette wheel lands on you, you get to do the challenge? Dumb. That being said, the challenge did look a bit difficult. Eat a wasabi bomb in two minutes. Now I've never even thought about eating wasabi, but if I were in this competition I know who I would want for my partner...Lar. I enjoy hot foods a good amount, but when we got suicide wings from Planet Wings, I was downing milk after one bite. Lar put down six to eight of those things like it was nothing.

The 'Crazy' James Zinkand Award (2009)

The 'Crazy' James Zinkand Award for the
Contestant You Love To Hate in a Reality Competition

Rank. Character (Show)- Total Points...(My Rank)
10th. Tina (The Amazing Race)- 2 points

9th. Michelle Costa (Big Brother)- 3 points

8th. Ace Gordon (Survivor)- 4 points

7th. Lil Rounds (American Idol)- 4 points

6th. April Dowling (Big Brother)- 4 points

5th. Terrence (The Amazing Race)- 6 points...(5th)

4th. Jerry MacDonald (Big Brother)- 14 points...(2nd)

3rd. Allison Iraheta (American Idol)- 15 points...(3rd)

Runner-Up
2nd. Scott MacIntyre (American Idol)- 16 points...(4th)

The Poolie Goes To
1st. Margie and Luke (The Amazing Race)- 17 points...(1st)
And and with no guest spot, you are once again stuck with me...

Although Luke and Margie won this award and Scott MacIntyre took second, I'd like to start off by saying The Quiet Pool Perspective and its voters have nothing against handicapped people. The thing is these ones were just awful. There wasn't one moment of Luke's airtime on The Amazing Race that I didn't want to to slap him in the face.

I fee like it is very easy to hate contestants on The Amazing Race. The stressful atmosphere they are engaged in at all times creates situations that illuminate their bad sides. Unlike Survivor or Big Brother, where there is a lot of down time on camera, Amazing Race is on the go at all times. That being said, of all the people I've hated on this show, Luke takes the cake. The kid needs an attitude adjustment and I don't think his mother would ever give it to him. She babies him like there is no tomorrow. Let the dude live his life as normally as he can and stop making excuses for him when he clotheslines the other contestants.

The Amazing Racers

The Amazing Race is down to the final three teams. Victor and Tammy (The Asians), Margie and Luke (The Deafs) and Jaime and Cara (The Cheerleaders) will battle it out for the Million Dollar Prize next Sunday. It's a shame that Tammy is the only player left that I like.

Luke and Margie are awful people. I can't stand how mean spirited Luke is toward everyone else. Usually I'm a big fan of people being mean, but this dude is the worst. A couple eps ago, when Luke and Jennifer were running toward the box, he boxed her out and threw an elbow at her dome. He immediately started complaining about how terrible Jen was, and of course Margie joined in. Neither of them can see anything from anyone else's point of view. Luke's mom is hardly any better. She thinks that everything is about her son's disability. It's like Zach Morris hanging out with the girl in a wheelchair. When Luke and Margie started to complain to Phil about the non-existent, terrible things Jen did to Luke, Jen and LaKisha began to giggle. Immediately Margie claimed they were laughing at Luke because he's deaf. Why would they laugh at him for being deaf, when it's much funnier that you two are so out of your mind that you think Luke didn't start all of the controversy?

I really liked LaKisha and Jen before the past two episodes. After Jen almost blows it for the team last episode by crying about having to swim a couple of lengths of the pool, they luck out by having that leg of the race extended. They get themselves back into it and Jen decided to make the worst move in any competition I have ever seen. After eating a whole bunch of disgusting food (which Jen has to drink four bottles of water to get down), the girls start their final sprint to the pit stop in third place. On their way to the famous Bird's Nest in Beijing, LaKisha and Jen stop so that Jen can use the bathroom!!! Are you serious?? They knew that The cheerleaders were right behind them. Sure enough when they get to the pit stop Phil tells them they lost by mere seconds and they are eliminated from the race. I don't know about you, but for a million dollars I would definitely let it flow.

There have been so many legs of the race that have taken place in Asian this season. It would be a great travesty if Tammy and Victor didn't make it to the final three. Victor was annoying in the beginning when the team wasn't doing very well, but now that they're winning, I enjoy this squad. They are easily my favorite team heading into Sunday's finale.
