Friday Night Lights- Injury Limp
Midway through Injury List I started thinking to myself that recently Friday Night Lights just hasn't been that great. Maybe I over-hyped it in my mind, or maybe it has trailed off since the greatness that was the first season, but this year just hasn't been that satisfying.
My initial thought was that the story telling just wasn't anything to write home about, and that the great characters are the main thing holding it together. If you substituted average characters into these plots it would be a sub-par show. The Coach Taylors, Tim Riggins and Matt Saracens of the world may be the reason that nothing that interesting has happened as of late.
Chatting with T-time about this fact, he brought to my attention that the first season might have been that much better because it had such a great story to start with. It was your prototypical sports story, based on the book Friday Night Lights and had plenty to work with. I mean the star quarterback goes down, gets paralyzed, and the team rallies behind the backup QB and wins the Texas State Championship. How are you going to surpass that as a story? Well in my opinion they haven't. What else can you do? Have them lose. Well they did that, now they've run out of sports stories.
Until they get to season four where they have a terrible team and can now use this God awful East Dillon team as a new type of sport story. The winless schmucks that take down the might Dillon Panthers and end their season. The Lions may beat the Panthers at the end of this season, or they may lose, but my major point is that they haven't done a good job at making this story line prominent. Their ability to showcase a great story has been lost. They have come back to a football plot once in a blue moon this season. When they end up beating Dillon at the end of the year, it's not going to feel as satisfying because there hasn't been nearly enough build up.
It seems as though they have been putting much more effort into the side characterization stories. These minor stories of the series have never been fantastic, but the high quality of all of the characters have usually improved them. I've always loved Coach, Riggins, Saracen, Julie, etc. And although I detested many characters over the years (Street, Lyla, Tami) they all have evoked certain emotions, albeit mostly hatred, in order to improve their own plotlines.
Maybe it's that they've run out of good stories, or maybe its that the new characters aren't up to snuff, but recently things haven't had the same feeling. I have definitely grown fond of newcomer Becky Sproles, but I could care less about what is going on in Vince, Luke or Jess's lives at this point. All three come across as dull.
Other Thoughts
-Have they always been terrible at sports related stuff, because this week's aberration was so laughable. Luke limps off of the field after enduring yet another blow to his badly bruised hip. When the coaches take a look at it, they see the ginormous bruise and are outraged. Coach T asks, "What the hell is that?!?" And the assistant coach responds, "It's a hip flexor. He's done. He's out for the season."
First of all, the hip flexors are a group of muscles in the body, not an injury. Sure that's semantics, but if you're not a sports announcer you usually don't say it's "a knee" when someone tears their ACL. Secondly, just from looking at a bruise, this guy knows that Luke has severely strained or torn his hip flexor muscles? I don't think so. I know the show likes to skip past the ins and outs of football as of late, but how bout a little screen time for the kid dealing with this injury instead of saying "hip flexor, out for season."
-I loved Tinker finally getting some nice speaking lines.
-I loved longtime head of Secret Service Aaron Pierce coming back as Landry's dad. I also loved the awkwardness between Jess and Lance's family, especially when the mom asked how she was liking O'Bama as President.
Here's hoping the final two episodes end in a bang.

Peyton Manning the Card Player
It takes a pretty momentous occasion to get me to blog about a sporting event these days. Sure when my favorite athlete on my favorite team wins his fourth NFL MVP award, I'll write something up to proclaim my love for him. When that same team wins the AFC Championship and is on their way to their second Super Bowl in four years I'm not that inclined to post. But, when said favorite athlete dissects the (stat-based) best defense in the league in a fashion that seems eerily familiar, The Kid gets inspired.
I am not alluding to Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas or any other great quarterback of years past. Peyton Manning's stunning performance from yesterday's championship game was oh so similar to the day Brett Maverick had when he sat down to play poker with Annabelle Bransford, Angel The Spaniard and the rest of the card players in Crystal River.
Just as Rex Ryan and the rest of the J-E-T-S were running their mouths the week up to Sunday's game, Annabelle seemed to never shut up, while Angel and the young gunfighter seemed to think they easily had what it took to take out Maverick in this game of cards. In order to be allowed into the game of five card draw, Brett had to promise to lose for at least an hour. While watching the game yesterday it seemed as though Peyton and head coach Jim Caldwell made a similar promise to the New Yorkers. We promise that we will lose, for at least an hour. And they did, 17-6.
Just as Maverick explains (after taking pot after pot from the fools) he was simply learning their tells while losing. As Angel, Annabelle and the gang stole pots from Brett, he simply smiled and waited until he had enough information to take them all for all that they were worth. This is exactly what Peyton did to the Jets. As he was rushed and blitzed from all angles, he never panicked. He merely took the sack when he needed to, stayed patient, and figured out exactly how the Jet defense was playing him.

After falling to the ground on his own a few times, instead of fumbling or throwing picks like the quarterbacks before him did against the Jets, Peyton turned things around as he ended the first half with a 58 second drive that brought the Colts within four points, at 17-14. While Maverick figured out that Annabelle twirled her hair when she was bluffing, Peyton similarly figured out exactly how to slice through the vaunted Jets D by getting the ball in perfect position for Austin Collie to make three easy catches on his way to the endzone.
Angel continued to shuffle his front cards to the back and his back cards to the front and Maverick kept on getting richer. Come the second half, Peyton took advantage of the corner backs that couldn't cover, lighting up the defense by connecting with Pierre Garçon on a total of 11 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown. All in all Peyton took over the game and routed the Jets, 30-17, finishing with 377 yards, three tds and no picks.
Now don't get me wrong, the parallels aren't all there. No one came in during the middle of the game and threatened to kill Peyton if he didn't throw some interceptions, which then led to a huge fight in the parking lot where Peyton beat up seven dudes with weapons. But hey they can't all be winners kids.

Peyton Does It Again
My favorite professional athlete, and should-be comedic actor, received his second straight National Football League Most Valuable Player Award today. Peyton Manning now leads the NFL for most AP MVP Awards in the history of the league, garnering his fourth honor this year. Last year he won in a landslide and this year he was much closer to taking home all of the 50 votes. He actually got 39.5, compared to 32 a season ago. Drew Brees was the only other player with more than two votes, receiving 7.5.

Final Vote:
Peyton Manning- 39.5
Drew Brees- 7.5
Philip Rivers- 2
Brett Favre- 1
So somebody actually said "this Peyton/Brees thing is too tough to call, I'm gonna give them each a half of a vote"? That person should be out as a voter. I guess it's a tough job, but somebody else should do it from now on. If you can't decide on who deserves the award, you shouldn't be voting. I have more respect for the guy who voted for Chris Johnson last year. At least he made a decision. Speaking of, how does the guy who voted for Chris Johnson last season not vote for him again this year when he totaled over 2,000 yards rushing?
Last Year's Totals:
Peyton Manning- 32
Chad Pennington- 4
Michael Turner- 4
James Harrison- 3
Adrian Peterson- 3
Philip Rivers- 2
Kurt Warner- 1
Chris Johnson- 1

#1 Football Movie- Remember The Titans
Starring: Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Wood Harris
Great characters, great storyline, great football...Remember the Titans has it all and more. Not only are both Denzel's Herman Boone and Patton's Bill Yoast fantastic high school football coaches but two great characters that compliment each other nicely.
There is a great cast of characters on the team; from Frankie Stechino to Dr. Turk, the Notebook guy to Motar, TC Williams Titans had an awesome team of dudes. Heroes star Hayden Panettiere as Coach Yoast's young daughter is hillarious.
Last but definitely not least is the soundtrack. As with most movies set in the late 60s/early 70s, Remember the Titans is filled with great tune after great tune, and it really helps give it the number one spot on this list.

#2 Football Movie- Varsity Blues
Varsity Blues (1999)Starring: James Van Der Beek, Amy Smart, Jon Voight
The Prefontaine to Friday Night Lights' Without Limits, Varsity Blues is by far the superior movie about Texas high school football. Here are my four favorite things about this movie and why it is the second best film on football.
1) Jon Voight as Coach Bud Kilmer. Voight portrayed this sick, sadistic, power hungry coach unbelievably well. This dude, who cared about nothing but winning and feeding his ego, reminded me very much of a coach from my past. Whether it was forcing players to play through injuries or non-stop acts of harrassment, this guy had serious issues and was extremely fun to watch.
2) Hating on Jon Moxon. James Van Der Beek's character, Jonathon Moxon, was the absolute worst until the very end of this movie. He's so lame I wanted to slap him silly. The difference between 'Mox' and say Dorothy from Jerry Maguire is that nothing about Renee Zellweger's character got me interested. Hating Mox was extremely fun and added a lot to the movie. Now don't get me wrong, the final speech by Mox at halftime was fantastic and a major highlight for me.
3) Amy Smart is awesome. No matter what the context, I've loved Amy Smart in movies. Here she plays Jules Harbor, Mox's girlfriend and the sister of the starting quarterback, Lance Harbor. She battles the conflict between her brother being injured for the season and her boyfriend becoming the star, all the while looking fantastic with the rare brunette hair style.
4) Great football scenes. Some movies just know how to create fantastic football scenes, and this is one of them. There's action packed plays, there's drama filled situations and the musical accompanyment is fantastic during every game the West Canaan Coyotes play.

#3 Football Movie- Jerry Maguire
Jerry Maguire (1996)Starring: Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., Renee Zellweger
Jerry Maguire is a classic movie that happens to revolve around football. If it weren't for some of the terrible Renee Zellweger parts, this could be one of the best all time. Rod Tidwell is easily Cuba Gooding Jr.'s best performance by a country mile, and is up there with some of the best characters ever.
The first thing most people think about Jerry Maguire are some of the most used lines in sports movie history. They are so popular that I didn't even have to look these up...
Jerry: "The f*ckin' zoo is closed, Ray."

Jerry: "The f*ckin' zoo is closed, Ray."
Ray: "You said f*ck."
Jerry: "Uh...yeah...I..."
Ray: "Don't worry. I won't tell."

#4 Football Movie- We Are Marshall
We Are Marshall (2006)Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox, Ian McShane
What an anbelievably horrific beginning to We Are Marshall. It is the true story of the 1970 Marshall Football Team that was devastated by a plane crash killing almost all of the team and coaches. The accident really grabs you early and forced this movie watcher to be concerned for the future of Assistant Coach Red Dawson (Matthew Fox) and team captain Nate Ruffin (Anthony Mackie). Ruffin rallies enough students to convince the board of governors to let Marshall play the 1971 season.
McConaughey is brilliant as head coach Jack Lengyel who goes out of his way to take the seemingly unwanted position. Lengyel and the rest petition the NCAA to let freshmen play so that they can field a team. McConaughey makes the character strong but quirky, and his greatness culminates with his encounter with coaching great Bobby Bowden at West Virginia. When Bowden lets Lengyel and Dawson have free reign of the West Virginia game tapes, McConaughey's accent of "That's first class coach...first class," is my favorite moment of the movie.
I'm not gonna lie...I just watched the trailer and I got chills during the scene when almost the entire student body is out on the green chanting "We Are...Marshall!"

#5 Football Movie- Little Giants
Little Giants (1994)Starring: Rick Moranis, Ed O'Neil, Shawna Waldron
Ed O'Neil propels this movie from a good kids sports movie to a hilarious comedy about little kids' football. Sure I get plenty of unintentional comedy from the Ice Box and a few of the kids have a couple of good lines, but without O'Neil as Kevin O'Shea this movie would fall to pieces. Not much funnier than a grown man that loves winning at the peewee level, hates on his little brother and thinks that girls shouldn't be allowed to play football. Butz as his sidekick also helps with a couple of gems.
(After Zoltec finishes the 40 yard dash)
Zoltec- "How'd I do Coach?"
Kevin O'Shea- "I don't know son, I don't have a sundial."
(O'Shea and Butz examine Zoltec after he gets tackled hard. They find food in his helmet.)
Kevin O'Shea- "You'll never get anywhere treating your helmet like a lunchbox son. What's that?"
Butz- "Cheetos."
Kevin O'Shea- "Crunchy of puffed?"
Butz- "Puffed."
Kevin O'Shea- "Whimp."
(O'Shea and Butz spying on the Little Giants' practice)
Butz (analyzing the Giants formation)- "The center's in the backfield, the tackles are out wide, and the quarterback's not even there."
O'Shea- "They're just standing around Butz!"
(Kevin telling Danny to not make another peewee team.)
Kevin O'Shea- "Guys like you and kids like that, that can't help it that they're no good."

#6 Football Movie- Necessary Roughness
Necessary Roughness (1991)Starring: Scott Bakula, Hector Elizondo, Robert Loggia
I first saw this movie a long time ago when I was a young buck. I never watched it for a long time after and always had good memories about it. T-time bought it a while ago and I finally got around to watching it last summer. It did not disappoint. Necessary Roughness is the classic story about a college football team that, due to sanctions by the NCAA, has to form a squad from their current student body without the use of scholarship athletes.
My birthday buddy Scott Bakula plays the 35 year old quarterback, that was a high school star but never played college because he had to take care of the farm when his dad died. Between him, Sinbad as a physics teacher turned player, a chick as the kicker, a karate master and Rob Schneider as the game announcer, there are plenty of shenanigans to go around.

#7 Football Movie- Rudy
Rudy (1993)Starring: Sean Astin, Jon Favreau, Ned Beatty
I don't even know if I like Rudy. I've only seen it once or twice and not in a long time. I remember it being quite boring and I know I didn't like Rudy himself. He was an idiot. On the positive side, I do remember the jersey scene as being fantastic. All the dudes on the team laying their jerseys down on the coach's desk so that he will let Rudy suit up for his final game...emotional. Then we have the Ru-Dee chants from the crowd during the final game...awesome. Here's the thing we couldn't embellish the story more so that he didn't just get a single tackle? How bout a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a touchdown? I'm just sayin.

#8 Football Movie- Any Given Sunday
Any Given Sunday (1999)Starring: Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid
As in most sports movies, and especially the football variety, great coaching characters can make the movie. In Any Give Sunday Pacino is fantastic, if extremely exaggerated, as Coach D'Amato. Cameron Diaz, per the usual, puts a damper on the whole thing, but between Pacino, James Woods, Jamie Foxx, LL Cool J and Lawrence Taylor, there are plenty of positives to bring it back up to par. I love that they couldn't use any of the actual NFL teams or logos, because it was such a negative portrayal of professional football. When it comes down to it, Pacino's final game speech is one of the best and gives the film the number eight spot.

#9 Football Movie- Friday Night Lights
Friday Night Lights (2004)Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, Garrett Hedlund
The only real reason Friday Night Lights made the list is because it paved the way for one heck of a television show. Although the show, the movie and Varsity Blues were all based on the HG Bissinger book that chronicled a West Texas high school football team, it was this movie that created the buzz for the serialized, scripted drama that is fantastic.
In this version Billy Bob plays the coach and he is somewhere in between Jon Voight's Varsity character and Kyle Chandler's on the show, but he's not as good as either of them. None of the players stand out to me and I can't tell you if they won or lost in the end, and that is why it is no higher than ninth.

#10 Football Movie- The Longest Yard
The Longest Yard (2005)Starring: Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Burt Reynolds
I never saw the original, but since it was made a long time ago, we can assume it wasn't very good. Burt Reynolds is good and all, but I wish they had Norm MacDonald playing Burt Reynolds, because that is always hilarious. Chris Rock is never actually funny (but fools A LOT of people) and this is far from Sandler's best work, but it's still a decent football flick. I loved all of the football players and wrestlers in it; Michael Irvin, Goldberg, Bill Romanowski, Diesel and Stone Cold brought a nice vibe to the film.

Super Bowling

I hate to take time away from the movie characters list but there is one of the least important days of football coming up tomorrow. What is so great about a day of football with only ONE game on. You wanna know the best day of football? This year it was Sunday September 21st. During week 3 there were 15 National Football League games on Sunday. Yes Week 17 had all 16 but so many of them meant nothing.
Let's take a quick look at some of the highlights from fabulous Week 3. The Cards and Steelers both lost. Arizona lost to the Redskins 24-17 with The Edge posting 93 yards on 18 carries. Pittsburgh fell to the Eagles 15-6 with Big Ben putting up 131 yards, no tds, a ceptor and got injured. Teams of the blog, Colts and Raids, both lost in nail biters, but the Dolphins put the smack down on that team that plays in Massachusetts 38-13, with Ronnie Brown going for 800 yards and 12 touchdowns.

As for tomorrow, sure about half of the people out there are saying the 7 point favorite Steelers are going to win, but the other half are saying the Cards will win. It is my thought that the public is finally ready to jump on this Cardinal bandwagon and that mean the wheels are ready to come off. 53% on ESPN Sportsnation are picking the Cardinals to win outright. If that doesn't spell a Steelers blow out, I don't know what does. Doesn't it make sense that the Cards were running on a lot of energy the past three weeks and this two week break has slowed them down? Lost a little bit of their rhythm? The Steelers on the other hand don't play on rhythm. They're frantic and are just flat out good.
That's why my pick for the Super Bowl is Steelers 30, Cardinals 14.
Be sure to listen to me when I give out football advice because I play football in my front yard with my brothers at least three times a year.
In other bowl news, The Boss bowled a 298 in Wii Sports the other day. What a ridiculous addict he is.

NFL Overtime

I don't understand why this subject brings up so many arguments. The NFL overtime rules are definitely not the best, but at least they are still football. College overtime is just silly. How can we not do it like basketball? An overtime period to determine the winner. Looking at it in pure sport, this seems like the only real solution to the problem. I find it weird that I have not heard anyone but myself and Golic speak out about this as the correct answer to NFL overtime. You have a time game after regulation, you play another period to find the winner. If it is tied after that period, then you get a tie. Simple. Sure the overtimes will be going a bit longer than they do now, increasing the probability of injuries, but not by that much. I'm not saying another 15 minute period....how bout ten minutes? If the offense is so good that they can drive down the field, score a touchdown and waste all of the ten minutes, then they deserve to win the game outright. But if the team that wins the coin flip can only get down to the 30 and kick a field goal, then the other team gets their deserved chance to win. This would be real football. Get it done.

Peyton Is MVP
Peyton Manning won his third NFL MVP in a landslide. My favorite athlete since 1998 received 32 of the 50 total votes, with no other player receiving more than four. It is now Peyton and Favre as the only two guys with three MVPs. I predict Peyton ends with five by the time he's done.

Final Vote:
Peyton Manning- 32
Chad Pennington- 4
Michael Turner- 4
James Harrison- 3
Adrian Peterson- 3
Philip Rivers- 2
Kurt Warner- 1
Chris Johnson- 1
Here is the real question. Who in the world voted for Chris Johnson??? It seems to me that either T-time or Chris Johnson himself somehow is voting for the NFL MVP these days. That is ridiculous. Kurt Warner is the only other guy I don't agree with getting a vote, although it's much less crazy. Not a single vote for Drew Brees? Interesting. I love how Pennington and Rivers were the second and third QB vote getters in the MVP voting, but were both behind Cutler, Favre, Collins and Cassell in the Pro-Bowl voting. Man the Pro-Bowl voting is bad.

Simmons on Coaching
This is why Billy Simmons is the man...
** Philly's Andy Reid will be battling former assistant Brad Childress on Sunday in a matchup Peter King described as "teacher vs. pupil." Teacher vs. pupil???? That explains everything! Do you think Reid tutored Childress in classes like "Screwing up a Two-Minute Drill," "Hanging Your QB Out to Dry," "Dumb and Possibly Damaging Field Goal Attempts," "Idiotic Short-Yardage Calls," "Special Teams Collapses," "How To Blow Your Challenges," "Leaving Yourself With No Timeouts" and "How To Remain Calm As You're Getting Booed By Your Own Fans"? **
