After Vinsanity left us all speechless at the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest with his array of gravity defying jams, the event went into a complete lull for the next half of a decade. Honestly, does anyone remember what Desmond Mason, Fred Jones or Josh Smith did to win this thing? The terribleness of the event culminated in 2006 when Nate Robinson was awarded with his first title because he's shorter than me. The fact that it took him 17 tries to finish his final dunk should have gotten him fives across the board, but instead he won and I continued to hate the contest.
It was in 2007 when the competition was revitalized as Dwight Howard made his first appearance and Gerald Green took home the crown. Howard may try to be funnier than he is at times, but his ability to use creativity at this event is never frowned upon by me. From his putting a sticker at the top of the backboard while throwing it down to Green dawning Dee Brown's jersey while covering his face on a dunk, it was all gold. Green won the title with a windmill while jumping over a table. Yes my friends, we were back.
The next season was when Dwight and the Dunk Contest came into its own. He started off by throwing one off the back of the backboard, catching it behind the glass and throwing down a windmill with the left hand. Something so athletic we had not seen since his current teammate VC back in Y2K. Defending champion Green fought back with his most creative attempt to date as he blew out the candle on a cupcake that sat on top of the rim, while stuffing one home. Green, I might add, had plenty of other dunks in 2008 that would have gone for 50 against this year's challengers. But it was Dwight taking the whole thing to another level as he put on the Superman shirt and cape and dunked it (honestly it didn't matter what dunk he did at that point). When he alley-ooped it to himself, tapped it off the backboard with his left and dunked it with his right, he capped off a night of pure entertainment that we had not scene at NBA All-Star weekend since Vince's craziness back in 2000.
Last year, although in no way could have matched 2008, was quite another fantastic night as Dwight and Nate Robinson had plenty of gimmicks up their sleeves (even though they left the incredible dunks at home). Between Dwight getting changed into his cape in a phone booth and bringing in an 11 foot hoop, to Nate changing into his green uniform as he became Kripto-Nate it was again a great contest with plenty to get excited about.
That brings us to last night's debacle of an event. I don't even know where to start with what we were given by these idiots. Reggie Miller was actually telling the truth when he kept saying that these were the dunks that the dudes sitting around the Calabasas YMCA would throw down. It was so boring that it actually became interesting. How bad were they going to be? Were they really not going to use any props or gimmicks? Did no one think of a new dunk this year? The longer it went on, the funnier it got that this was actually the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. The announcers really shined during this moment as they grabbed on to the sentiment of every single person watching and made fun of how bad the dunkers were doing. So Nate Robinson wins his third title when one of his two final dunks was a regular two handed jam?!? You guys are joking right?!?
Unless they want this thing to turn back into what it was in the early 2000s they need to find guys like Dwight that are going to keep it interesting. I'm not saying Dwight has to keep coming back. He's done it three times and gave us more than we could have asked for. But come on fellas. I know the creative dudes are out there. Just come out next year and give us another show. If I don't deserve that than all is wrong in the world. After all, I do watch the NBA All-Star weekend and the NBA Playoffs, but no regular season games. I am a devoted fan.
Other Thoughts On NBA Saturday
-The best of Saturday's festivities was definitely the announcing crew- Kenny, Chuck and Reggie were absolutely on their game.
-Three-point Shootout is easily the most bland aspect of the day (probably because I know I coulda beat half of those dudes back in my prime).
-Shooting Stars competition is sufficient because you always like to see dudes hit half-court shots.
-Then we get to HORSE. An event that could be fantastic, but in these last two years has been terrible. The major problem is in picking your contestants. If Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo aren't two of the least personable dudes in the NBA I would be shocked. Rondo seems to have as much personality as a door knob. Chris Webber is screaming out Rondoooooooooo for 30 seconds and you don't crack a smile, or even a death stare? Are you a robot?
Okay so you aren't going to get good talking, charismatic guys, then stop talking and let them take more shots. Stop showing replays and analyzing their next moves. Just heave up the crazy shots. That leads us to our next problem. None of these dudes do fancy shots on the regular? You are professional basketball players. You're in the gym all the time. I've seen dudes do crazy shots on youtube all the time. Figure it out.
I honestly had much more fun watching my boss play against CCSU's Ken Horton in a game of HORSE Saturday morning than I did watching these three jokers. Not only did the Durantula not have any crazy shots, but he embraced the fact. He said his plan was to win with regular shots. No one wants to see that KD!

Most Hated College Basketball Players
As a favor to my buddy Bob over at Ballin' Is A Habit, I did a bit of consulting and guest writing on their most recent article. If you want to read some of my thoughts, and those of Ballin' Is A Habit, on some of the most hated (and loved) college basketball players of the decade head over to BIAH.
Here's a taste of what I had to say on the subject.
Tyler Hansbrough
It's one thing to show no emotion at all, it's a whole other thing to be Tyler Hansbrough. This dude showed a lot of emotion during his four years at North Carolina, and every second of it made me want to throw up. There's a reason that his nickname was Psycho T. Hansbrough was a complete nut. His ridiculous actions on the court made me hate him more and more every time I saw him spaz around on the floor for a loose ball.
He was the epitome of getting the most out of what you have. Who likes that? I'm not a Husky fan, (just the first example that came into my head) but I loved cheering for a guy like Rudy Gay who was uber-talented but was labeled as lazy. He knew he was good and therefore didn't have to act like an idiot on the court.
Was he a star in college? Yes.
Is he now a star in the pros? Yes.
Did he ever make me want to throw myself through a window when I watched him play? No.
Tyler Hansbrough had one out of those three aspects.
He's never going to be a great pro, and everyone knew that. Sure he received numerous college accolades, and had the stats to ensure them, but that doesn't mean he deserved those stats. When you play in a manner that many basketball players can't respect, it diminishes your likeability. Falling on the ground every five seconds, pretending that you were fouled, is flat out bush league.
I was a UNC fan growing up. I loved the likes of VC, Rasheed, Stack, Jamison. Tyler Hansbrough single-handedly destroyed my fandom of the Tar Heels and turned it into a hatred for the school I once wanted to attend.
Adam Morrison
Adam Morrison played at Gonzaga, which is a mid-major in the West Coast Conference. We could obviously talk again about how he was hyped well higher than his skill level, but the normal hatred for this college basketball player ran much deeper than undeserved stats and honors. It really comes down to two things. A moustache and crying.
Morrison was extremely gangly and had a girl's haircut during his years with the Zags. Although both characteristics turned me off, neither caused as much pain as his disgusting quazi-moustache. Here is the thing with facial hair. If you can grow a great beard, you do it at some point in college. Hey, if you want to have the luxury of being able to sport a sweet chin strap before you leave high school, then by golly you shave twice a day when you're a freshman (I actually don't recommend this doing this). A nice goatee or some solid muutton chops can do wonders for you as a young man, but under no circumstances do you let a peach fuzz-esque moustache grow in above your lip. When hair starts to grow on your face, but you can still see through it to your face, you know it's not a good look. Not to mention it is just a straight up stash. Unless you are in the 80s or an old man, moustaches just look weird on white dudes.
In the Zags' NCAA Tournament game against UCLA, the Bulldogs led the entire way only to see their lead slip away to the Bruins in the final seconds. Sure everyone and their brother has cried at one point or another, but it wasn't like Mr. Moustache against UCLA. This dude started balling hysterically before the game even ended! Yeah I've seen some dudes tear up at the post-game press conference. It is an emotional time, and when a player really cares about the team's success, his portrayal through tears can some times be heartfelt. Morrison's tears were not simple. The dude's face was going out of control. He couldn't contain himself. Let me remind you that the game wasn't even over yet. He could've taken it down for a game-winning shot. Did he? Of course not. He just finished filling up a soup bowl with massive tears. You can't play basketball like that. If America didn't detest this kid before that, it sure did him in.

Top Basketball Movies (2 & 1)
2. Blue Chips (1994)
Starring: Nick Nolte, Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway

Nick Nolte plays Pete Bell, the basketball coach of Western University (based on UCLA). Western has a storied history with championships upon championships. The movie begins with Petey going through the end of his first losing season, and not handling it well. In his classic pre-game speech to his team, which opens the film, Coach curses all up and down at his players about how bad they are and how much he can't stand coaching them. After the season ends he realizes that he needs to get better players and do a better job of recruiting. JT Walsh is Happy, the Buddy Garrity type head hancho of the boosters. When Pete has trouble getting blue chip players, Butch McRae and Ricky Roe to come to Western, he calls upon Happy to get the deal done. Blue Chips tells the story of the behind the scenes antics of college athletics recruiting. Nolte is fantastic and Shaquille O'Neal as the 7'4" Neon Bedeux is an excellent touch.
Favorite Character: Coach Pete Bell
Least Favorite: Jenny Bell
Quote: "Why don't you go to Bulgaria. I heard they're lookin' for whimps like you....whiners!" Happy.
1. Hoosiers (1986)
Starring: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper

Just listening to the Hoosiers theme might make it number one. It is the well known story of the small town Indiana high school that wins the all-class state championship. Gene Hackman is Coach Norman Dale and he comes to Hickory High with some new coaching ideas. The small town people, as well as most of the players don't enjoy his style. What he's left with is a town that hates him and a team of seven guys. After Coach Dale tells Jimmy Chitwood to shove it, Jimmy then decides to join the squad again and the Hickory Huskers make their run to the championship. I could definitely do without all of the Barbara Hershey side action stuff, but the side stuff with Dennis Hopper makes up for it. Hopper plays Shooter, a drunk father of one of the players that loves basketball. Coach Dale ends up handing him the reigns of the squad after purposely getting thrown out of a game. Now if they ever made Hoosiers 2 into an actual movie, it might be number one on the list.
Favorite Character: Coach Norman Dale
Least Favorite: Myra Fleener

Top Basketball Movies (4 & 3)
4. Celtic Pride (1996)
Starring: Damon Wayans, Daniel Stern, Dan Aykroyd

I have probably watched Celtic Pride somewhere between 50 and 75 times. It ranked number six on my top comedies list a year ago. The duo of Stern and Aykroyd are ridiculously hilarious in this movie about two jerks that live in Boston. Mike O'Hara and Jimmy Flaherty are huge Celtics fans and when C's face off with the Utah Jazz in the finals they get a little crazy. After meeting Jazz superstar Lewis Scott in a Boston club, they decide that it would be in the best interest of the Celtics to get him completely trashed so he can't function in the next game. The next morning Jimmy and Mike find Lewis Scott tied up in their apartment. The comedy ensues as they try to keep him away from the garden so that the Celtics have a chance at winning the NBA Championship.
Favorite Character: Mike O'Hara
Quote: "It's Jimmy. He's in there, whipping up a bunt cake," Mike O'Hara
3. Pistol: The Birth of a Legend (1991)
Starring: Adam Guier, Nick Benedict, Murrell Garland
The Pistol has three things going for it that get it to number three on the list. 1) A great hard times high school basketball story about the greatest college basketball player of all time, 2) Fantastic music to coincide with all of Pete's 'homework basketball' drills, and 3) So much unitentional comedy that it may or may not be funnier than Celtic Pride. The Pistol tells the story of Pistol Pete Maravich as he makes his way on to the varsity basketball team as eighth grader. His dad Press tries to instill a great sense of confidence in young Pete, but the upperclassmen bball players attempt to knock it out of him. The Pistol earns his spot in the starting lineup and becomes the star of the team. This all leads to what else, but a matchup with the best black team in the state and a fantastic buzzer shot from Pete (that wins or doesn't win the game).
Favorite Character: Coach Verne Pendleton
Least Favorite: Helen Maravich

6. Above The Rim (1994)
Starring: Duane Martin, Leon, Tupac Shakur

Kyle Lee Watson is a high school basketball star in New York City. Above the Rim tells the story of Kyle and his relationships with two brothers. Birdie, played by Tupac, is a drug dealing brother that has many a connection to throw Kyle's way. Birdie's brother Shep, played by Leon, is a former high school basketball star that now works as a security guard at Kyle's school. Things fell apart for Shep when his best bud died while the two of them were slapping the backboard on a rooftop. After smashing the backboard he fell right off the building. The major climax is an outdoor basketball tournament Rucker Park style. Birdie expects Kyle to play for his team after giving him many gifts. Kyle Lee Watson decides to get his life together and play with his boys from school. When things get rough, Shep joins Kyle's team to take on Birdie's squad in the finals.
Favorite Character: Birdie

5. White Men Can't Jump (1992)
Starring: Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes, Rosie Perez

If you have never dunked a basketball before, how do you bet all of your money that you can? Well Billy Hoyle is just really dumb. Unlike the ridiculous Bill Simmons, I, and I would assume most normal people, love the basketball scenes in White Men Can't Jump. Other than the jeopardy part, there is nothing good about any of the non-bball scenes. How bad Wesley Snipes is at basketball adds a whole lot to the quality of watching this film. Add to this the fact that every street baller in LA shoots they're layups backwards and you have great bball action. Billy Hoyle goes to LA to hustle bball courts to make money. After Billy hustles Sidney Deane, they join forces to make some solid cash, only for Sidney to return Billy's favor and hustle him back. The two of them stick it out to play in the outdoor bball 2 on 2 tournament to make back the money Billy lost.
Favorite Character: Billy Hoyle

Top Basketball Movies (8 & 7)
8. Teen Wolf (1985)
Starring: Michael J. Fox, Jerry Levine, Susan Ursitti

In every high school there is a kid that turns into a werewolf and uses his crazy athletics werewolf powers to dunk all over everyone in basketball games. Oh wait, that was only in Teen Wolf. Scott Howard is a regular kid that isn't very good at basketball and never gets the girl of his dreams. Once he starts turning into the Wolf he scores 40 points a game and can get any girl he wants. Not to mention he could dance like there's no tomorrow. After his bball teammates get mad at him for being a selfish show-off, Scott decides to play the final game as himself. Of course he kills it with points, assists and steals. Interestingly enough he does some of the exact same plays three or four times. The best moment in referee history was when they allowed Mick to stand directly underneath the basket after he fouled out so that he could stare at Scott while he shot the winning free throws.
Favorite character: Rupert 'Stiles' Stilinksi
Least favorite: Lisa 'Boof' Marconi
Quote: "Help me Rhondaaaa!!!" Stiles.
7. The 6th Man (1997)
Starring: Marlon Wayans, Kadeem Hardison, David Paymer

Wow, two extremely realistic movies in a row. In The 6th Man two brothers, Antoine and Kenny Tyler (A&K All the Way), are at U of Washington playing basketball. The older brother, Antoine, is the star, while Kenny does most of the dirty work on the team. During one of the first games of the season Antoine falls into cardiac arrest and dies on his way to the hospital. The follow up to this is one of the saddest moments in movie history. Sure enough Antoine comes back as a ghost to help Kenny and the Huskies get to the Final Four. Kenny has to deal with the many problems that come with having a ghost for a brother, but Washington does make the NCAA finals. Somewhere along the way Kenny's teammates find out about Antoine and decide that don't want to play with him anymore. Kenny makes the difficult decision to tell Ant that he has to leave.

10. One on One (1977)
Starring: Robbie Benson, Annette O'Toole, Janet Hayes

Henry Steele is a high school basketball superstar in his small town, but when he gets a scholarship to play at a big time college things take a turn for the worst. Whether it's that the other players are better than he though they would be, or no one's giving him a chance, Henry is barely surviving. The coach is a nice guy though. He asks Henry to give back his scholarship and get the heck out. Henry of course sticks it out and when the team loses many players to injuries and foul-outs, his number is called. The kid puts on a show scoring, passing and making the winning basket. Now the coach lets him know that no one will bother him about his scholarship. My boy Henry lets the coach know where he can put the scholarship, "All the way up, with a red hot poker."
Favorite Character: Henry Steele

9. Space Jam (1996)
Starring: Michael Jordan, Wayne Knight, The Looney Toons

The one and only movie on the list with animation. Wow how did I put Space Jame this low? MJ kills it. Bugs, Daffy and the gang are fantastic. And there is a wonderful small role for Bill Murray. So after an evil cartoon decides he needs the Looney Toons to spice up his amusement park, he sends big gooney monsters to kidnap them. Bugs convinces them to play a basketball game to determine their safety. After the monsters take the talent from Barkely, Ewing, LJ, Mugsy and Shawn Bradley, the Toons call upon MJ to help them beat the Mon-Stars.

12. Passing Glory (1999)
Starring: Andre Braugher, Rip Torn, Sean Squire

As is the case in many great sports movies, Passing Glory deals with racial tensions. It is the story of the best black high school basketball team in Louisiana versus the best white high school basketball team in Louisiana. In the 1960s these teams would never play each other, but after Joseph Verrett comes back home to Louisiana after teaching in Chicago he has some crazy ideas. After the bball coach takes a college job, Father Verrett is forced to take over the team. Although he doesn't know much about basketball he loves to teach the boys life lessons. The major one being that blacks and whites can play basketball against each other. It's a showdown for the ages.
Favorite character: Father Joseph Verrett
Least favorite: Mike Malone Jr.
Quote: "That's totally uncalled for!" Father Robert Grant.
11. The Air Up There (1994)
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Charles Gitonga Maina, Yolanda Vazquez
Jimmy Dolan, Shake and Bake. The longest set up ever for a one-on-one basketball move. If anyone every tried to use it in a game they would probably be in for a shot clock violation. The Air Up There follows Coach Jimmy Dolan as he tries to get a fantastic recruit from Africa to come to his college. He needs to land Saleh so that he can take the reigns of the squad once the head coach retires. Jimmy faces many a trouble trying to get Saleh to return to the States with him. In the end there is an inter-tribal game, and if Jimmy's team wins, Saleh will play for him in the US.

Top Basketball Movies (14 & 13)
14. Love and Basketball (2000)Starring: Omar Epps, Sanaa Lathan, Dennis Haysbert
Half chick flick, half basketball movie. What’s better than that? Well 13 movies I will name later, but Love and Basketball is a classic. Monica Wright was on my top females list earlier and Quincy McCall is much sweeter than the Eric Foreman I have to endure on Monday nights. Throw President David Palmer into the mix and it’s not half bad. Monica and Quincy grow up together as good friends and star bball players in high school. They finally get together and then go off to college at USC. They then inevitably break up, but then Monica comes back to play him in one-on-one for his love. The dude obviously wins, but they get back together anyway.
Favorite Character: Quincy McCall
Least Favorite: Coach Davis
Quote: “Double or nothing,” Quincy.
13. Semi-Pro (2008)
Starring: Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, Andre Benjamin

So there’s this guy Will Ferrell who has made a few comedy pictures in his day. Well one of them was Semi-Pro. Although it is not one of the elite Ferrell flicks, the basketball player in me laughed hysterically at most of the bball scenes. The very first basketball game is classic, with Jackie Moon taking over as the star with Coffee Black not out to the court yet. Jackie posts up, demands the ball, kicks it out and demands it again over and over again. He then continues to take eight steps on his way to a sky hook and then gets extremely mad at the ref when a travel is called. Not to worry when Coffee Black enters the game, he takes over, and after dribbling through the entire opposition multiple times, he swishes a three from the corner. While the entire team is hugging and celebrating the basket, you can see the visitors scoring a fast break layup at the other end. It just doesn’t get much better than that.
Favorite Character: Jackie Moon
Least Favorite: None

Top Basketball Movies (16 & 15)
16. Eddie (1996)Starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Frank Langella, Dennis Farina
Edwina 'Eddie' Franklin is a Knicks fan and after she gets called down to the court to participate in the half-time show, the crowd falls in love with her. When the coach is fired, the owner turns to Eddie to turn things around in New York. Now I'm not a big Whoopie fan, and I don't even enjoy her that much in this movie, but it is the surrounding cast that gets Eddie on the list. Langella, Farina and Richard Jenkins are all great, but it is the performances by NBA stars Rick Fox, Mark Jackson, John Sally and Malik Sealy (blow a kiss to the sky in remembrance) that put it over the top.
Favorite Character: Stacy Patton
Least Favorite: Claudine
Quote: "Yo, that's my jersey!" Walt Frazier.
15. He Got Game (1998)

Starring: Denzel Washington, Ray Allen, Rosario Dawson
Two in a row with Rick Fox. Ray Allen plays Jesus Shuttlesworth, the best high school basketball player in the country. He Got Game tells the story of Jesus being recruited by every school in the country and the troubles he faces while trying to get off the streets. His dad gets out of jail temporarily so that he can convince Jesus to go to a certain school. Speaking of Mr. Shuttlesworth, how terrible was Denzel's jumper?

Raftery With The Smooch

After what most people are billing as an uneventful first four days of the NCAA Tournament, I would tend to disagree with them. Just because there weren't a lot of huge upsets doesn't mean it wasn't exciting. There were many close calls with Memphis and even Pitt in the first round. I like to see the sleepers win a game here and there, but I'm glad to see all big names in the Sweet 16. The fact that we are blessed with these kinds of match-ups this weekend is awesome.
-Pitt v. Xavier
-Villanova v. Duke
-UNC v. Gonzaga
-Syracuse v. Oklahoma
-Memphis v. Mizzou
-UConn v. Purdue
-Mich St. v. Kansas
-Louisville v. Arizona
Sure I would've liked it if West Virginia, Marquette and Wake were there for bracket benefits, but no biggie.
The best part of the tournament, as always, was Bill Raftery.
-To the big fella
-The little guy
-With the kiss
-Onions, double order
-Little lingerie on the deck
It's all gold but what got me loving him to death was sometime back in high school when someone hit a bank shot on the first play of the game and he goes with, "A little smooch early."
My favorite of all time was in college when a dude banked a shot but it circled around the rim, hit the board again and fell in. Raf goes with "Oh with the double smoocharoo!"
This past weekend near the end of the Pitt/Ok State game a Pitt player went to the bench and an assistant coach leaned over and kissed him on the top of the head. There was a bit of a pause in Verne's commentary before Raf comes in with the emphatic "The Kissss!" Unbelievable.
Here is a clip of Ian Eagle talking about the origin of Raf's "Onions!" call. Audio Clip
And finally a little enjoyment from Raf himself calling a Gonzaga v. OK State game from a few years ago.

Fantasy LL- Week 4
Although there is one more week of regular season match-ups, the pairing are set for the Finals in Week 6. Since Mags and I are 4-0, we will face off in the Championship. Big Daddy and The Silver Fox will play for third place and since The Fire Guy and Larry Avidahboblay are both 0-4, they will face off in the battle of the basement. This week Mags scraped by again, beating Lar, and now has the second least amount of points. Ty puts up the most points this week and is second to me overall but has had the misfortune of bad matchups and will not be able to get to play for the championship.Standings

Fantasy LL- Week 3
Week 3 came and went with no Tuesday games. My boy Sammy Simmons was the top scorer with 92 to help me give Ty his second loss. Thankfully Covucci outplayed Desmaris because Goldstein got hurt against the Brewers and didn't play on Saturday. Looks like I'm gonna have to put Jay Simpson into the line-up next week. Mags sneak by Andy to stay undefeated and Larry is the low scorer yet again.Standings

Fantasy LL- Week 2
So this week was awesome. Ty gets beat by Mags by one point! Desmaris goes for 65 in double OT, but Madej gets injured on Friday and blows it for Ty. I obviously destroyed Larry with my boy Sammy Simmons coming up with a huge 141 point week. Elson Pickering also killed it on my bench and will move into the lineup next week. Locksmith scores the third most points in the week, but falls to Ev behind three game weeks for all five of his starters.CountryJess (1-1)...743

Fantasy LL- Week 1

So my second round pick, Elson Pickering, has decided to get injured and play with it. He has continued to play 10 to 20 minutes a game and perform well below his standards. Luckily I picked his handcuff in the last round to fill in for me, while Elson gets back into the swing of things. Ty leads the league in overall points this week with three guys with three games. Mags beat Evan with one of his guys (Temgoua) having a phantom disappearance from the lineup. Larry had all five starters with three games this week and failed to produce 300 points...ouch. Rob Estep was a great pick by Lar. Harlee Wood had the best individual performance (57 points) against good old Vassar. Here are the three matchups of Week 1.
