This is Andy Bernard's first nomination and win for the comedy character you most love to hate. Back in 2009, Andy was nominated for and lost by only one point in the best supporting character award.  Here to discuss how Andy Bernard went wrong is Poolie voter, T-time.

Remember when we loved The Office? It seems so long ago. But it was only twelve months ago that Poolie voters judged it to be the best comedy on television. Of course that was when Steve Carell still graced the program with his unique blend of humor and heart. We knew it would not be as good after Michael Scott got on that plane to Colorado, but we couldn’t have imagined it would fall apart completely.

The program’s fall from grace was quick and severe but it didn’t have to be. There was still a stable of talent in the cast. All they needed to do was spread the load. Go back to classic Jim/Dwight pranks. Give more screen time to Kevin and Ryan. This should have worked. It’s not what they did. The Office instead attempted to force the load once carried by Steve Carell onto one man. Bad idea. That one man was Ed Helms. Worse idea.

It’s safe to say that Andy Bernard, as portrayed by Helms, has destroyed this show. This is in large part because HE IS NOT FUNNY.  It’s also because he thinks that he is. He overdoes every bit. A perfect example can be found in the finale. Andy as the down-on-his-luck janitor had some inherit comedy. But Andy doesn’t know when to stop, pushing every bit until the viewer is just annoyed. STOP TRYING SO HARD. If he had just played that bit to its logical conclusion, it might have been good, but he can’t help himself. Frustratingly, that was one of Andy’s better moments this year.

The sadder part is that Erin, a formerly fun character was dragged down into the morass with him. They keep pushing this Andy-Erin relationship on us like it is something we should care about. For an audience to have a stake in a TV relationship, they need to feel for one of the characters. We never cared about Andy finding love. That was never part of his appeal(when he had any). They were matched up at first because of the jokes and then later it was just assumed we would care. This is the Parks and Rec approach. That’s not the way that The Office built Michael-Holly or Jim-Pam. It is the way that they ruined the affection we formerly had for Erin Hannon.

In the end, this is a comedy. All Andy Bernard needs to do is be funny. There was a time when he was. The Stamford version of the character was amusing in small doses. That time is long past. The Andy Bernard of the past few years was a tolerable annoyance. This year, his step into the bright lights has ruined a once beloved franchise.

This is Gabe Lewis's first Poolie nomination and first ever win for the character you love to hate in a comedy series.

Somebody had to take over for Toby.  No, not after Toby left for most of the season, but after Toby became awesome.  After winning this award two years ago, Toby was hilarious mostly in his line about Michael "not liking jams."  But Gabe...Gabe was the worst.  I loved hating on him week after week, and I loved rooting for Erin to dump him.  Her telling Gabe that she can't stand him in her breakup speech at the Dundies was one of my favorite moments of the season.  Anything that makes this loser cry.

Spring Poolies Watch- Comedy

With only two months left in the Poolies season, it's time to take another look at how things are shaking out before the final ballots are released on June 1st. Here's your chance to agree or disagree with the chairman in order to give whatever show or character tickled your fancy this year a shot at glory. Next up are the comedy awards, let's take a look around the pool...

The Seinfeld Award For Best Comedy Series

Definites
Community, The Office, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, 30 Rock, and The League. Pretty great core group of seven shows right there. With no Curb Your Enthusiasm on during this year's voting season, a lot of awards are up for grabs.

In For Now
Perfect Couples, Eastbound and Down, and Sonny With a Chance. What is NBC thinking? I'm fine with bringing The Paul Reiser Show into the Thursday lineup, but why are you putting it in for Perfect Couples over Outsourced? Are people actually watching Outsourced? It is still terrible right? Eastbound and Down and Sonny are hanging on by a thread. The former because of a down season and only six episodes, and the latter because it hasn't been on in forever because of Demi's forced hiatus.

Outside Looking In
Cougar Town, Bored to Death, Traffic Light, Rules of Engagement, Family Guy, and Mr. Sunshine. At the end of the day, none of these shows are cracking that top seven so it hardly matters, but we shall see how the end of the season plays out for these bubble series.

The Cory Matthews Award For Best Lead Character in a Comedy Series

Definites
Michael Scott (The Office), Phil Dunphy (Modern Family), Chris Henkel (Big Lake), and Jeff Winger (Community). Big Lake? That's what you may be asking yourself, but Chris Parnell got the job done on that slightly terrible Comedy Central comedy.

In For Now
Here's where things get tough. None of these guys definitely deserve a nod, and there are so many that may deserve one. Dwight Schrute (The Office), Andre Nowzik (The League), Dennis Reynolds (Always Sunny), Kenny Powers (Eastbound), Jack Donaghy (30 Rock), and Cam Tucker (Modern Family). Again, it's tough to leave discern between some of the guys on The League and Always Sunny, but Charlie definitely had a down season and Andre kinda proved himself to be one step ahead of the others to garner a nod.

Outside Looking In
Vance (Perfect Couples), Charlie Kelly (Always Sunny), Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death), Justin Russo (Wizards), Mac (Always Sunny), Kevin McArthur (The League), Jay Pritchett (Modern Family), Tom Haverford (Parks and Rec), and Mike (Traffic Light). I could see a spot for almost any of these guys. At the very least, they deserve some recognition right here!

The Arthur Spooner Award For Best Supporting Character in a Comedy Series

Definites
Frank Reynolds (Always Sunny), Troy Barnes (Community), Taco McArthur (The League), Chris Traeger (Parks and Rec), Tracy Jordan (30 Rock), and Pierce Hawthorne (Community). I know my choice of five out of those six is going to be extremely difficult. Stacked category we have ourselves here.

In For Now
Luke Dunphy (Modern Family), Adam Rhodes (Rules of Engagement), Kevin Malone (The Office), and Ray Hueston (Bored to Death). The Modern Family's that have been great this season have highlighted Luke, those that weren't good...he was usually missing. Adam continues to be tearing it up as the punching bag for Patrick Warburton and David Spade on Rules. In a couple of months I probably will have forgotten how much I loved Ray on Bored, and Kevin seems to be making a comeback the second half of this Office season.

Outside Looking In
Andy Dwyer (Parks and Rec), Manny Delgado (Modern Family), Ryan Howard (The Office), George Christopher (Bored to Death), Abed Nadir (Community), Ben Wyatt (Parks and Rec), and Andy Bernard (The Office). A bunch of nominees from last year in the mix here, including the runner-up in Manny. Still some time to make a final run at some of those last few spots.

The Phoebe Buffay Award For Best Female Character in a Comedy Series

Definites
Sonny Munroe (Sonny With a Chance), Miley Stewart (Hannah Montana), Erin Hannon (The Office), Gloria Pritchett (Modern Family), Lilly Truscott (Hannah Montana), and Dee Reynolds (Always Sunny). Sonny is still my far and away number one choice. If you haven't seen Demi Lovato's performance on this show, you need to do so ASAP. Last year's winner, Erin, has continued to impress with small amounts of screen time this season.

In For Now
Jenna Maroney (30 Rock), Laurie Keller (Cougar Town), Leigh (Perfect Couples), and Annie Edison (Community). A couple of newcomers in the mix here with Laurie and Leigh. All of the females on Perfect Couples could vie for a spot, although there's really only room for one of them. Annie has been surprisingly absent from much of the recent Community episodes, so let's hope that changes soon.

Outside Looking In
Alex Russo (Wizards), April Ludgate (Parks and Rec), Holly Flax (The Office), Claire Dunphy (Modern Family), Britta Perry (Community), Amy (Perfect Couples), Lisa (Traffic Light), and Leslie Knope (Parks and Rec). Don't worry, I'm just giving Holly time to fester. Once a month or so passes, I'm sure her performance will take effect and she will steal a spot on the ballot just like she stole Michael Scott's heart. Alex Russo schtick kind of wore off on me throughout this season of Wizards. David Henrie stealing the show didn't help her out either.

Gabe hasn't even been in The Office much as of late, and he still is the front runner for this award. If anyone other than me watched Episodes, I'm sure you would agree that Matt Lablanc and I aren't the only ones who hated Beverly. And what would a “love to hate” list be without the presence of Jason Biggs?

Zeke Beakerman (Wizards), Stevie Janowski (Eastbound), Ellie Torres (Cougar Town), and Gabe Duncan (Good Luck Charlie). I find it harder and harder to type Zeke's name on this list when I think about how good that “smooch sesh” line was a few months back. Oh Stevie Janowski how you may have been one of the main reasons season two of Eastbound didn't live up to the first. Why did you go from loveable annoyance to utter disaster?

Toby Flenderson (The Office), J.D. Lutz (30 Rock), Roman Cohen (Mr. Sunshine), Meredith Palmer (The Office), Travis Cobb (Cougar Town), and Adam (Traffic Light). Roman and all of his idiocy is climbing his way up the charts, while many on the outside suffer from lack of screen time. If there were more Toby or Lutz this season, I'm sure I would hate them just as much as those on the ballot right now.

The Office has had so many stand out eps this season ("Threat Level Midnight" and "Garage Sale" come to mind) that anything is still up in the air, while a great show like Parks and Recreation has yet to have a single episode stand out from the pack. Still plenty of finales to go before the ballot is set so this all could change.

Holiday Poolies Watch- Comedy

I'm a little late on my first of the month timeline for these now bi-monthly Poolies Watch posts, but as the saying goes "better late than clever." That's not it? Well either way, the 2011 Poolies Ballots are six months away, which means the season is six months over. Here we'll take a look at how the awards are stacking up so far, with who's in, who's out, and who's awful. Next up are the comedy awards. As always, if you think a show or character deserves more credit, or any at all, feel free to leave a comment. You don't want to end up like Mags last year, trying to illegally write in Tom Haverford for the Arthur Spooner Award. Also spit any performances you've liked at me on Twitter via @quietpool.

The Seinfeld Award

I guess I have seen the error in my ways. It is either that, or I’ve just given into the criticism of Jack and T-time for not being all about The League. Although not in my trifecta of definites, it should feel plenty secure with its current spot of a nomination. The HBO comedies and Sonny, on the other hand, should be worried, because once Curb and Parks & Rec come back, who knows what will happen. I have also given in to the hype of Cougar Town, which is much better (and different) than it was at the start of its first season.

The Cory Matthews Award

Here is where I see a problem. After Winger and Dwight, I have no idea who deserves to be in out of the next nine. No one from Always Sunny or The League has stood out from each other so far. I could even throw Pete into the mix for guys from The League. Kenny Powers is a great character, but he didn’t really have that great of a season. Add the fact that there were only seven episodes of Eastbound, and he could be in danger. Also, I don’t laugh that much at anything Jack Donaghy does, but he is such a staple of 30 Rock, that I would have a tough time leaving him off.

The Arthur Spooner Award

Jeff, Troy and Pierce on Community

We have a pretty top heavy category here, starting with two dudes who have made quite a few leaps. Troy Barnes has quickly become one of the funniest characters on tv. Are you allowed to love both Troy and Abed? Because now that I am a Troy guy, I’m slowly becoming less and less of an Abed lover. Similarly, Taco MacArthur has been absolutely hilarious on this season of The League, and is line for a vote from me this summer. The bottom of the category gets tricky, as I don’t think Manny has done enough so far to merit a nomination, but neither has anyone else below him. Ryan Howard’s few moments on The Office have been great, but I’m sure he’ll get knocked out as the season goes on.

There was only a single change since the Fall Poolies Watch. Jenna Maroney switched in for Claire Dunphy. That is in no way a knock on Claire, because she’s having a great season, but Jenna has been stellar up until this most recent episode. I really like Laurie Keller of Cougar Town, but realize I am the only one watching it, so I might not waste a nomination on her. Erin Hannon, after winning a year ago, has continued with great performances so far in season seven.

The other day I thought my whole world caved in. I don’t believe in a lot of things in this world, but I believed that Lydia Dunfree was one of the worst characters on television. Then after T-time finished his marathon on Party Down season two, he tells me that she was his favorite person on the show. What?!?! Did I miss something, or has he? Critics sure did love Louie, and while I thought some of the moments were decent, I couldn’t stand Louie as a character. He probably won’t make the final cut, but I thought he deserved some credit for being the worst this time around.

Leave it to the Disney shows to have a couple of fantastic episodes per season. They will have a few clunkers in there, but once or twice a year you get gems like “He Could Be the One” or “Falling For the Falls.” Although Community, Modern Family, The League, and others are having great seasons, no single episode from those series has stood out thus far.

Fall Poolies Watch- Comedy

I have grown accustomed to reviewing television here at the Quiet Pool Perspective as of late, but my first love in regards to tv has always been ranking, voting and listing. So as we get closer to the Third Annual Quiet Pool Television Awards, we will continue to take a look at how things are shaping up. With some of our favorites gone, and plenty of new competition, the 2010 Poolies should once again be quite the event.
