Greek 410- Satisfy My Soul

Spoiler Alert...Below are some thoughts on last night's series finale of Greek, "Legacy." So before reading any further, watch the ep, spoil the original Star Wars movies for somebody, then read what I have to say.

After finishing the Greek series finale this morning, I tweeted that it "passed out Friday Night Lights for most satisfying finale of the year." Maybe I was a bit hyperbolic in that statement, but I really couldn't have asked anything more of "Legacy" as we said goodbye to our favorite students at Cyprus Rhodes University.

I didn't think we were really building up to a series finale as the last few episodes went by, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much this episode both continued the current story lines, and wrapped up many of the long running themes of the series beautifully and succinctly.

The episode in and of itself had plenty to work with. It had its excitement as the gang pulled together to perform its best caper to date. Albeit stealing that fraternity paddle didn't end up saving the day, but it was still a really fun moment watching them pull off one last set of antics. It also had its sad moment as Rusty, Beaver, and myself all shed a tear for the Kappa Tau house as it was demolished following the unsuccessful movement by Rusty with the frat paddle.

But what the episode really did was leave me completely satisfied with the long running character arcs. Cappie grew up. He was slowly doing so throughout this final season, but in accidentally graduating from CRU and deciding to join Casey in whatever her plan was, Cappie proved that he was a different man than the one we met those few years ago. In standing up to her law professor, Casey proved that she wasn't going to just follow the crowd because it was the right thing to do for her future. This more free-wheeling Casey Cartwright is someone I'm happy to finally see show up.

Oh Rusty Cartwright, how I hated you so. The one they call Spitter sure did get on my nerves time after time, but that won't stop me for being proud of him for stepping up to the plate and being the new President that Kappa Tau needs. Sure he'll probably do some lame things on occasion, which will embarrass the legacy that Cappie left, but it was a perfect arc for this nerd turned frat guy. Him being with Ashleigh though? That's something I'm not as thrilled about. It felt extremely rushed, and that they needed somewhere to take her character. I feel like her going off to be independent might have been a better ending, but I'm just picking nits at this point.

Sure there was Calvin heading off to some foreign country to help people, but the other conclusion I was most pleased with was the fact that Evan finally made up for all his douchery when he sided with Cappie and his friends over his future. This is a character that was so easy to hate at moments, but you could always see how he got off the wrong path. To watch him be the nice guy in the end was so very satisfying.

The best part of the episode though, was without a doubt, finding out Cappie's full name. That was the only thing I went into this finale needing to know. If they never told us what his name was, I would have been extremely upset. More upsetting than any non-answer a Lost fan had following that finale. And to find out his name was as awesome as it was, that was just the icing on the cake...Captain John Paul Jones!?!?! Why I never guessed that Cappie was short for Captain is beyond me, but I'm so glad that I didn't. I was surprised as Ashleigh as she read the name on Cappie's diploma aloud. Fantastic stuff.

The funny thing about Greek is that I started watching the show almost jokingly. If I remember correctly, it was Jackie Boy and Jon the Bon watching it that first summer it aired. I checked it out with them and was laughing at how ridiculous it was and how much I hated some of the characters (Rusty, Calvin, etc.). The show grew into one the series that I took more seriously over the years. It used comedy extremely well, with more pop-culture references per minute than Community, and seemed to be more in touch with the young adult demographic than anything else on tv. They weren't glorifying the life of a young adult, or debasing it, like a 90210 or Gossip Girl tends to do. It just felt real, and that was one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much over the years.

Idol Results, Top 24- Trading Places

Spoiler Alert...Below are the results and some thoughts on last night's episode of American Idol. So before reading any further, watch the ep, put on your pink puffy shirt, then read what I have to say.

First, a few quick thoughts on what I thought of the girls on Wednesday night...Utterly uninteresting. There were a couple of performances that I enjoyed - Thia Megia and Pia - but everyone else I could have cared less about. I am always gender biased in this competition, but the guys once again have more talent, no matter what the judges or producers will try to tell you for the second straight year.

Now onto last night's results show, which was decently entertaining if only because there were so many people getting through and getting cut in one night. Let's start with America...GOOD EFFING JOB! They finally did their job only to let the judges screw everything up with the wildcards a half hour later. Jacob, Paul, Casey, Scotty and James was pretty obvious immediately following the guys performance show. I thought the girls was more wide open, but my prediction of Thia, Pia, Lauren A, Karen, and Naima was only off in that America liked little Haley Reinhart more than the African Princess. Would I personally have rather seen Robbie Rosen make it instead of James Durbin? Yes, but I think Durbin deserved it more, hence my prediction.

And then we got to the portion of the show when the judges had to make some decisions. Boy did they fail miserably. You choose three guys and three girls to perform once again as wildcards. I had no problem with the three girls selected to sing. I'm not biased because she's on my fantasy team and I predicted her to get the wildcard, it's just that Kendra was definitely the best out of the three girls to perform. The fact that she was the only one to not make is ridiculous. Then there were the three guys selected. Really? Jovany? He's on my team and even I didn't want him to sing again. JJ made a good point in that there's no way they needed to see him go again because he's the same as Stefano and the judges already knew they liked Stefano more. Why not give Jordan Dorsey a second chance to sing something not by Usher? Oh because he's a dick and has been mouthing off about the producers making him sing Usher? Well then okay. I agree with Stefano being the best guy of the three wildcards, but both Robbie and Jovany were better than the girls. Seeing as this is yet another "year of the ladies" on Idol, they had to take two girls and only one guy. Terrible.

So we head to the Finals with a Top 13. Who will take home the championship? I am rooting for Paul McDonald at this point. Sure it may be because he's the only person I have left on my team, but did you see that jacket he was wearing last night? Classic.

Before we get to the fantasy scores, let's talk about the blockbuster trade that went down following the draft and the two performance shows. Tyson, who drafted Tim Halperin and Jordan Dorsey in the first two rounds, sent both guys over to Larry's team. Larry in turn handed over eventual Top 13'ers Haley Reinhart and Ashton Jones. Immediately following this trade me and Jayj chatted about how terrible it was for Larry. It wasn't that the two chicks were really any better than the two dudes that Larry received, but it was that the girls' finalist spots were so wide open. The guys were basically locked up...yeah maybe Jordan Dorsey had an outside shot at a wildcard (if the guys had received two), but he was not getting in the Top 10 with that Usher performance. Fantasy Reality TV history was made here, and Tyson got the best of last year's champion in this one.

Overall Pick in parentheses.

Survivor Week 3- Russell Mania

Spoiler Alert...Below are the results and a few thoughts from last night's Survivor: Redemption Island. So before reading any further, watch the ep, grow out your shoulder hair to match Ralph's, then read what I have to say.

This week on Survivor, there was not nearly enough Agent Phil. I guess you had to give Russell as much screen time as possible because he was on his way out the door, but he's really not that interesting anymore. His tribe members made the right move in getting him out. Why would you let him hang around making moves towards getting back to his third final three? And taking a dive during that challenge? I'm all for that if it is for the betterment of your individual game, which I believe it was for all involved. It hurts Stephanie and whoever that blonde girl is that was hanging around Russell, but they didn't know about the sabotage so screw them.

With the big immunity win for the yellow tribe, Jaydon and myself make are way back into this thing in fantasy scores. Here's hoping that Matt continues to dominate redemption island for the kid here.

Justified 204 Review- Bigger Plans

Raylan- "I want you to know that I know what's going on, out of respect."
I would have been happy if this week's Justified consisted only of the opening five-minute segment at the Bennett family picnic. Fortunately, "For Blood or Money" didn't stop there, providing plenty more drama and continuing this early streak of excellence on the series.

Let's start with that conversation Raylan had with the Bennetts at what looked like an extremely fun family get together. I mean, banjo music, toy gun fights, and good southern cooking? You can't beat that. Seriously, though, so much went down in that one conversation that it is hard to grasp it all. I'll give it a try...

Raylan opens things up by explaining that he knows that the Bennetts are up to something. That's just a straight ballsy move. Then, the idea that Raylan's family and the Bennetts have a history comes up again, which is why Mags thinks the Marshall is continuing to snoop around her family. What happened between these two families so long ago? And was it Raylan that crippled Dickie 21 years ago?

I'm sure these questions will get dragged out through most of this season, and I'll be more and more curious every time they come up.

Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- Top Ten

There has been a lot of tv going on as of late, and since I am as busy as ever, I am extremely far behind on plenty of shows. To be specific, as I write this intro on Saturday, I am 48 episodes behind on shows that I am currently watching. I have also quit on more than a couple shows in the past month, which if you know me, you realize is a difficult task in itself. At the beginning of February, I skipped the regularly scheduled Poolies Watch, but nothing was going to stop me from putting the Bi-Monthly Power Rankings into the Pool for the 10th straight edition. As always, the Quiet Pool Perspective Power Rankings take into account both current and past performance. The honorable mentions are not necessarily my next ten favorite shows, but rather those that deserve mentioning at this time. So without further ado, here are the March Bi-Monthly Power Rankings. Enjoy.

Rank. Show- (last time)...red=moving down, green=moving up

10. The Walking Dead- (9) Sundays on AMC
This could still be a one year - or six ep - wonder, but for the time being it remains in the top ten due to a fantastic first six eps.

9. Big Brother- (10) Summers on CBS
Survivor continues to be a watered down version of Big Brother, and I can't wait for my three ep a week fix from the CBS reality competition.

8. Sons of Anarchy- (7) Tuesdays on FX
Kurt Sutter went off on critics yet again last month. I worried about Sons because of Sutter once I started reading his blog, and after the disaster that was season three, my worries were necessary. I still am unsure if he can bring this show back to the greatness that was seasons one and two.

7. Justified- (13) Wednesdays on FX
If you've been reading my reviews at TV Fanatic, you know that I am loving the second season of Justified. It climbs an astonishing six spots to number seven this month, and I don't see it leaving the top ten any time soon. Timothy Olyphant is an absolute stud, and my favorite for the Frank Pembleton Award come Poolies Season.

6. The Office- (8) Thursdays on NBC
Don't let the critics and fan followers fool you, The Office has been as hilarious as ever this season. Between Classy, Christmas, Ultimatum, Threat Level Midnight and others, there have been some absolute classics. Michael Scott is one of the funniest characters in television history and Steve Carrell is set to go out on top in a couple weeks.

5. Chuck- (4) Mondays on NBC
As much as I love the main characters of Chuck, this show needs another interesting bad guy like whoah. I can never get enough of Morgan, Chuck and the gang, but since the demise of Volkoff things have been kinda stale in Burbank.

4. Community- (5) Thursdays on NBC
If I marked notches on my table every time Community made me laugh out loud, well there would be a lot of notches. Troy Barnes and Pierce Hawthorne are quite possibly the funniest one-two punch on television right now. Add Jeff Winger and Abed to the mix and you have a recipe for success. And to top things off, Britta has actually been enjoyable this season. Now if they could only get Chang back to wear he was at the start of the series. He's kinda letting me down as of late.

3. Mad Men- (3) Sundays on AMC
While you wait for the greatness of Mad Men to return to tv, explain to someone that "That's what the money is for!!!!"

2. Breaking Bad- (2) Sundays on AMC
It's too bad the previous season of Curb was so fantastically funny, because otherwise Breaking Bad would play a fantastic number one.

1. Curb Your Enthusiasm- (1) Sundays on HBO
And until Larry David and the gang come back and prove to be less funny than usual, Curb Your Enthusiasm will hang onto the number one spot in the rankings.

American Idol, Top 12 Guys- I Think I Got Nothing To Say To You

Spoiler Alert...Below are some thoughts from last night's Top 12 Guys on American Idol. So before reading any further, watch the ep, put a spell on me, then read what I have to say.

Although the level of talent on last night's first live American Idol of the season seemed to be extremely lacking, there was one major positive I gathered. Even though Simon Cowell was the best thing about the show, the judging panel as a whole really started to be a nuisance over the past couple of seasons. I in no way am saying that Steven Tyler or Jennifer Lopez brought anything of substance to last night's telecast, but you have to give them credit for being short! Between Kara and Ellen last season, we had some of the longest and tiresome judgments I have ever seen. If I weren't the type of guy who has to watch the whole episode, I definitely would have started to fast forward through whatever it was they were gabbing about. This is the type of judging I've been looking for. Steven and JLo basically just said whether they liked it or not and passed it along to the next person. Last year Randy went on and on at times - maybe only because he was trying to keep pace with Kara and Ellen - but in this first episode he seemed to tone everything down so he didn't seem like the one holding everything up. All in all the judging was pleasant enough. I'm assuming that once Steven and JLo get more comfortable, it will only get worse.

As for the contestants themselves...With a change of format - in that instead of dropping two losers each week, they will instead just take the top five plus wildcards into the finals after one week - the stakes were much higher in this year's first live show. Let's take a look at who succeeded and who failed.

Is this guy joking?
Brett Loewenstern- I am not embellishing at all when I say that I didn't think this kid should have made it through to Hollywood after his disaster of an audition. He needs to leave immediately and take his hair with him.

Standard covers will bring you down
Clint Gamboa- Not only did he pick a standard losing song in Superstition, but he did it terribly.
Jovany Barreto- The same can be said for this beefcake. I'll Be? Really? I don't care if it's round one or ten, you don't do I'll Be anymore. It got played out back when Joshua Gracin did it back in season two.

Don't take on these artists
Stefano Langone- I don't know what the judges were listening to on this one. If you take on the best voice in music today, you are going to fail. You can't sing Bruno Mars on this competition. You just can't.
Jordan Dorsey- And then there is Usher. He may not have the best voice in the world, but you can't try to dance and move like him Jordan. Unless your name is Chris Brown, it's not possible.

Bore me to death
Tim Halperin- This guy performed last night?
Robbie Rosen- I kinda liked this, but it was a little too sleepy to think he's going to take one of the top five spots. I don't see him getting a wild card from the judges over the likes of Stefano or Jordan, so it might be too late for Robbie.

Do what YOU do
James Durbin- I can't really argue that he wasn't good, but it was for me. If you want to scream and yell like the Adam Lambert copy cat that you are, go right ahead. Are you a homeless man's Adam Lambert? Yes. Is going to get you into the finals? Probably.
Scotty McCreery- Maybe it's because I've been living in Nashville and country music is growing on me, but I enjoyed this performance. Because it's so country, it's not going to be for everyone, but he should get by on just the bass of his voice.

My top three
Paul McDonald- Although he seemed to be playing a character more than giving a performance, I still really enjoyed his Maggie May. His "quirky" style as the judges put it, has instantly grown on me. I think he will prove to be one of the better contestants in the finals...if he makes it there.
Casey Abrams- He has the charm, that's for sure. I'm not over the moon on him as I know Tyson is, but he definitely has talent. I'm just waiting for him to bring the cello back out on stage.
Jacob Lusk- This was fantastic right? He showed power, control, tenderness...and then he started to sing. Seriously though, he was great. I don't like him, and won't be rooting for him, but I think he should do well in this competition based on that performance.

The women are up tonight, and I'm not looking forward to it.

One Tree Hill 817 Review- Morals Clause

August Kellerman- "I didn't say I didn't want him represented Mr. Scott. I simply don't want him represented by you."
One Tree Hill was filled with plenty of predictable storylines this week, but also delivered one with a surprising twist that had me itching for future episodes.

Has there been a more obvious ending to a weekly plot than Millie's live, on-screen tirade being a ratings hit? As they played it harder and harder that her social commentary was undoubtedly going to get her fired, it was easier and easier to see that the fans were going to love her. The predictability didn't stop me from enjoying the ride, though.

For the first time in a while, Mouth came out smelling like roses. His rant, which Millie eventually stole, was both entertaining to watch and completely justified. Why would they spend so much money on those street signs?

Bi-Monthly Power Rankings- 20 Through 11

20. 30 Rock- (HM) Thursdays on NBC
Even without Tracy Morgan around, 30 Rock has continued its solid bounce back season.

19. Top Chef- (18) Wednesdays on Bravo
This All-Stars season has been fantastic. Most of the time it's difficult to find people to root for on this show, but between Mike, Richard, Dale, Angelo, Marcel, etc. I've been cheering for most of them along the way.

18. Lights Out- (-) Tuesdays on FX
Like its FX cousin Terriers, Lights Out is unlikely to see a second season. And like Terriers, it will be a shame. The boxing drama has been really good so far, with interesting stories and a leading man that is easy to cheer for.

17. Parks and Recreation- (19) Thursdays on NBC
Rob Lowe has continued his comedic genius throughout the start of the third season, but it has been Adam Scott coming into his own that has moved Parks and Rec up in the rankings. Although some were raving about him early on, he was being wasted as just a straight man. Scott playing the anxious, awkward former teen mayor has improved the show this season. The only down side of bringing in Lowe and Scott, is that Chris Pratt has had to take a bit of a back seat. Oh well.

16. Modern Family- (12) Wednesdays on ABC
Modern Fam's fall from grace continues as it falls from 12 to 16 this time around. I really think it is the case that many of these characters were extremely funny to begin with, but now we're so used to them, that it has kind of worn off. If you're relying on characters, and can't write funny story lines, you will run into trouble. Without Luke Dunphy this show would probably be out of the Top 20 right now.

15. Treme- (15) Sundays on HBO
It feels like forever since Treme has been on the air, but it returns with the premiere of Game of Thrones in April. It will be quite the two hour block of television on HBO.

14. The League- (17) Thursdays on FX
I really have no idea how both this and Always Sunny moved up so much in the past two months while off the air, but they did. Plenty of League alumni have been on tv recently, including Shiva, Rafi, and even Ruxin on Parks and Rec a couple weeks ago.

13. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia- (16) Thursdays on FX
Until Always Sunny comes back on the air, try out the D.E.N.N.I.S. system the next time you go out on the town.

12. Boardwalk Empire- (14) Sundays on HBO
After winning many awards at the Golden Globes, SAG, and such, I have no doubt that Boardwalk Empire will also clean up at this summer's Emmy Awards. It was a very good first season, but I need more out of this show next season for it to crack the top ten.

11. Dexter- (11) Sundays on Showtime
It was a tough task to follow up the John Lithgow season, and although it wasn't quite as good, season five didn't disappoint. Julia Stiles had a great guest spot and Michael C. Hall was fantastic as always.
